Spring Fling Recap

By: Ashley Janzen The first ORHA show of the 2023 season is in the books,

with a healthy 314 entries! The ORHA Spring Fling show, held at Fletcher’s Horse World in Waterford, was sponsored in part by John and Sharon Fletcher, and was a fun ORHA family re- union for many members. The weather was perfect, and great memories were made.

Here are a few highlights… On Friday, the show kicked off with an evening of Ranch

Riding. There were 18 entries (12 on Saturday), and new member Faith Lewis and her horse Boomen N Time took first place both days, winning the circuit award - a gorgeous ranch pad from Erie Wind Stables and SS Performance.

Saturday featured an Intro to Reining class, which wel-

comed 10 new riders to our sport. Newcomer Faith Lewis came first again, and received a free ORHA membership, as well as a cowboy cowl from Hayley Stubbs of Buckskin Horse Designs. Also from Buckskin Horse Designs, a leather key chain was awarded to 2nd place winner Tina Cole, riding Liz Adamson’s horse, Sumac Rumor Has It. In the interest of celebrating all of our new exhibitors, a show pad from Linda Frederickson of CW Saddle Blanket Co was awarded by random draw to participant Lindsey Steenhoek, riding Christine Clapham’s horse, Whizkey Dunit Shiney. We also congratulate new exhibitors Jayden Gra- ham-Smith, Angel Deveux, Coral Kingsbury, Dylan Douglas, Linda Brady Munroe, Melissa Bonney, and Abby McAffer - all of whom received prize packages from ORHA.

Sunday was Mother’s Day, and 2 lucky ladies won gift bags

from Sharon Hart of Tim Horton’s and Michelle McAffer of Starfish Candle & Gift Co. Starfish also handed out 50 smaller gift bags, and let us sample their fresh-smelling soaps in the rest- rooms! All 1st place winners of non-money earning classes re- ceived awards from Buckskin Horse Designs, and 2nd and 3rd place winners received boot jacks and bucket ties from ORHA - as did 1st and 2nd place winners in money earning classes. Thank you to Gail & Paul Reid of Glendarvon Farms for adding $1000 to the Non-Pro division, as well!

Full results will be available on https://orha.on.ca/ soon. We are thrilled to see our association growing, and wanted

to feature a few of our newest members to help you get to know them! Please welcome…

had a lot of fun and can’t wait for the next one.” Kaelyn Read

Kaelyn - better known as

Katie - is from Whitchurch- Stouffville, and is in school to be a paramedic. Katie rides with Lindsay Kloster at Reiner’s Ridge, where she leases Spooks Be Nim- ble. She has been involved for most of her life in eventing, and this is her first year of reining! “I felt it was time for a change and I’m glad I came here! Everyone is so welcoming and supportive[, and] you really don’t get that in the English world,” she shared. Katie’s goal for the year is just to get out and have fun, and plans to make her rein- ing show debut in June.

Angie Trumpler Angie lives in Alliston, and works as an Occupa-

tional Health & Safety Specialist. Her horse’s name is My- Fancy Gunner, and she rides under the guidance of Ray Nitti Performance Horses, out of Quarter Valley Farm in King Town- ship. Angie grew up on a farm and had her first pony when she was 5 years old. She shared that she has had “a lifelong obses- sion with horses” and has bred and trained horses to compete in everything from Hal- ter

to Breakaway

Roping, Eventing, Hunter, and Jumper, taking a break to have a family. She hasn’t entered the reining show ring yet, but enjoyed watching her horse be shown by Elisa Melisch in the Rookie Pro division, and getting to know her team and stable mates. For now, Angie hopes to continue to build her horse’s confidence in the show pen, while building on her own skills, and developing a strong bond with her horse. She was “very pleased with how friendly and approachable fellow competitors were”, particularly when other exhibitors showed her how to find show results, and when Jonathan Newnham (whom she described as a “big Gen- tleman Cowboy”) reset a shoe her horse had pulled on the trailer, putting off preparing his own horses to help her, and refusing payment for the service. Angie is really looking forward to the next show!

Dylan Douglas Dylan is a Wa- Haley is from Brantford, and owns Legendary Landscapes

Ltd. She shows TL Boonstruck, whom she purchased from The Donaldson Ranch. Haley has a cutting and roping background, got involved in cowhorse events last year, and is now taking on reining! She is coached by both Jonathan Newnham and Chet Martin, and is very grateful for their support. Hayley showed in the Ranch Riding on Friday of the Spring Fling, and ran between reining in Waterford and cutting in Ancaster on Saturday and Sunday! She plans to show in Rookie when she can make it, but also showed in the Ltd Open due to timing, just to get some runs under her belt. She’s got a lot on the go, but is lucky to have a cool little 13.3 hand gelding who seems up for the challenge! One of Haley’s goals is to slow down and really work on being correct, but she’s also looking forward to watching her 3 year old be shown at the ORHA Futurity by Jonathan Newnham. When asked about her first ORHA experience, she said she felt very welcomed by the community, and added “this ole cowgirl

terford local, and works as a Car Audio Salesman. He is not from a horse family, has no coach, and no show experience, but has been rid- ing for 10 years, and has done a great job prepar- ing his horse, Lenas Two Eyed Miss, for their in- troduction to the show pen! Dylan took her into the Ranch Riding, Intro to Reining, and Green Reiner

classes at the Spring Fling, working on getting the both of them comfortable. His goal is to start showing more consistently in the reining, and eventually be competitive in the classes he en- ters. Although it was a lot of work, Dylan found his first show exciting, and says “the people were friendly and inviting and we will definitely be back!”

We are very happy to welcome these and other new mem-

bers, and look forward to featuring more of them in upcoming articles! See you at the next show!
