Why Not Try Reining?
By Alyssa VanKleek Thinking about trying reining? Learn
how reining compares to dressage and start planning your first reining pattern in a show pen near you! The National Reining Horse Associa-
tion has one of the most well known and well written objectives in the world of horsemen and horsewomen: “To rein a horse is not only to guide
him, but also to control his every move- ment. The best reined horse should be will- ingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to com- pletely. Any movement on his own must be considered a lack of control. All deviations from the exact written pattern must be con- sidered a lack of or temporary loss of con- trol; and therefore, a fault that must be marked down according to severity of de- viation. After deducting all faults set here within, against execution of the pattern and the horse’s overall performance, credit

should be given for smoothness, fi- nesse, attitude, quickness and author- ity of performing various maneuvers, while using controlled speed which raises the difficulty level and makes him more exciting and pleasing to watch to an audience.” Reining is most well known for
the spin and the sliding stop, but there is so much more to this as you sit aboard your willingly guided mount. The easiest english discipline to com- pare to reining is dressage. Long stir- rups, a deep seat, remembering your pattern, sitting the trot and keeping your horse’s hind end engaged are just a few of the similarities between these

styles of riding. Just like dressage, reining is judged one maneuver at a time as you complete a set pattern in a specific order. Any deviation in this pattern results in being disqualified, or in reining, getting a zero score (which is just as bad!). For many years the Royal Agri-
cultural Winter Fair put on a display of reining horse vs. dressage horse. The first thing that many people notice is the size difference! Reining horses are bred to be small, compact and stocky, whereas dressage horses are much, much taller with strong power- ful hooves. To equestrians most rein- ing horses would likely be labeled as
‘ponies’ because they are barely 14.2hh. The two horses standing side by side still carry a lot of similarities. They have a defined neck with a well built topline and strong hindquarters to give them a powerful engine for even the most delicate looking maneu- vers.
The Ontario Reining Horse As-
sociation welcomes horses and riders from all backgrounds to come to one or all of their shows to try out reining. The Green Reiner class is a great start- ing point for anyone that wants to give reining a try, sliding plates not re- quired! Slide on over to their website
