AQHA Director’s Report

following a member-submitted rule- change proposal made to the AQHA Stud Book and Registration Committee. At the 2022 AQHA Convention, the Stud Book and Registration Committee approved the addition of MYHM to the genetic health panel, with the rule change forwarded to and approved by the AQHA Board of Directors.

AQHA Adds MYHM Testing to Ge- netic Health Panel Myosin-heavy chain myopathy is

a genetic muscle disease that can result in two distinct clinic disease presenta- tions that both involve muscle loss or damage and are linked to the same ge- netic variant. Screening for MYHM is now included in the American Quarter Horse Association’s genetic health panel. MYHM was added to the panel

MYHM will automatically be included in the results for tests ordered after De- cember 1, 2022. • Breeding stallions tested after Jan- uary 1, 2023, must have the complete panel, including MYHM, before off- spring can be registered; stallions tested before January 1, 2023, who already have the 5-panel test results recorded with AQHA are not required to retroac- tively add MYHM. • Horse owners who want to add MYHM to existing health panel results have the option to add it to their horse’s record so long as the original hair sam- ple is still available and viable for test- ing; the cost to add MYHM to existing panel results is being offered at a dis- counted rate of $20. • MYHM is being offered separately to add on to existing 5-panel results for a limited time. Once that limited-time offer expires, MYHM will only be of- fered in the full genetic health panel through AQHA. •

AQHA Genetic Health: New Online Resource Along with testing for MYHM, the

Association and AQHA Genetic Health Task Force have launched a new genetic health online resource available at www.aqha.com/genetics. The new interactive tool educates

owners and breeders about how genetic diseases affect an American Quarter Horse, providing information about spe- cial care the horse might require and prompting thoughtful breeding deci- sions. Genetic health panel results should be carefully considered when making thoughtful breeding decisions to prevent further issues to protect future generations of American Quarter Horses. AQHA is fortunate to have a pas-

sionate group of members and scientists who care about the betterment of the American Quarter Horse who volunteer their time to serve on these committees and task forces and provide vital infor- mation for the decision-making process. 2023, visit www.aqha.com/leveling to access the Web-based AQHA leveling verification system within member serv- ices. Eligibility is for the entire year (January-December), so exhibitors only need to determine their level once per show season. When inputting an ID or changing ID numbers, select the search button twice to present accurate leveling data.

How AQHA Levels Work AQHA youth, amateur and open

divisions are divided into levels. The levels – Rookie, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 – are formulated from an objec- tive handicapping system that assigns exhibitors and horses to competition lev- els. Point ranges for each level by divi- sion can be found here. Classes are leveled based on ex-

hibitor or horse records. Level eligibility is based on points with AQHA, awards earned with AQHA and other equine as- sociations, and money earned with AQHA, alliance partners and other equine associations that has been dis- closed by the exhibitor. Find specific level-related guidelines within the AQHA official handbook, beginning with SHW245. “AQHA’s goal is to always offer

the best experience possible for our showing members, including the oppor- tunity to compete within a level playing field of similarly accomplished ex- hibitors and horses,” said Karen Mc- Cuistion, Interim AQHA Chief Show Officer. “Leveling the playing field helps add value to the AQHA showing experience and encourages more partic- ipation at AQHA-approved shows. Ex- hibitors and horses have the option to compete in levels above their level eli- gibility, however the system restricts

those who are no longer eligible from competing in lower levels.” Visit www.aqha.com/leveling to

use the level verification system. The online system will show you the levels you and your American Quarter Horse are eligible for in 2023. Achievements earned outside of AQHA competition could also affect you and your horse’s eligibility and should be shared with the Association. For exhibitors looking to compete in Level 1 amateur and youth classes, a Level 1 eligibility application must be filed and updated each year to disclose achievements, including those earned outside of AQHA competition. All Level 1 exhibitors need to complete the Level 1 application and return it to AQHA prior to competing. Previous Level 1 application information on file with AQHA may conflict with current eligibility or alliance partner earnings, which would affect the eligibility being shown on the level verification system. In accordance with SHW252.1, accu- racy of eligibility is the responsibility of the exhibitor. If assistance is needed in verifying level eligibility, the AQHA Show Department is available to help at 806-378-5083 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, Monday through Friday, or use the Contact Us form.
