ORHA News December 2022 Meet the ORHyA Varsity Team Don’t let the lower case fool you: the

“y” in ORHyA represents a big part of our organization – our youth! The Ontario Reining Horse Youth As-

sociation Varsity Team is comprised of members who are actively showing up until the age of 18. Throughout the show season, these young members volunteer and host fundraising events, while competing in the sport of reining. During the 2022 show season, we had

six very active and dedicated members of the varsity team: Brooklyn, Ella, Scarlett, Logan, Landon, and Caelin. These members volunteered for a combined total of nearly 150 hours, helping with everything from show set up, working the gate, and cleaning stalls, to organizing their own fundraising events. Some of their fundraising events this

year included 50/50 draws, selling derby or futurity squares, stick horse competitions, bake sales - and most recently, a cake deco- rating auction. Their fundraising efforts help offset the cost of year end awards, as well as fund scholarship opportunities. On top of this volunteer work, they still manage to take care of their horses, and show off their skills in the show pen! The members of the ORHyA answered

unanimously about their favourite part of the ORHA: the people! But each youth has taken the time to share their individual opin- ions on what they love most about reining. Here’s what they had to say:

SCARLETT ROS “I like the youth program at the

ORHA. I get to do lots of fun things, like movie nights, selling raffle tickets, and hanging out with other kids. There are lots of cool prizes and awards for the youth. Last year, I won my first belt buckle! My favorite part of youth reining is laughing and joking with all the kids in the warm up before our classes. We all cheer each other on. It’s pretty cool.”

ELLA KENDALL “I have been in the ORHyA for quite a

few years now, and I have to say, I think it’s one of my favourite things in my life at the moment. The ORHA is a group of amazing

Scarlett Ros

people that I am glad to be a part of. All the members of the ORHA are unbelievably friendly, close, and we are all like one big family. Everybody is super kind and sup- portive; it’s a small thing that makes the competition just that much better. My fa- vorite part of the ORHA has to be the inclu- sivity because no matter who joins the ORHA, as soon as they join, they’re a part of the family. The members of the youth group are kind and amazing people that I’m glad to call my friends. We do all sorts of fun activities and fundraisers that make the shows even more exciting and fun! I am so glad to be a part of the ORHA and to know the amazing people in the association!”

LOGAN KENDALL “Where do I even begin with the

ORHA? I’ve (literally) been around the ORHA my entire life. Everyone in the ORHA is like family; you know everyone and everyone knows you. There’s some- thing about going to a horse show, not only to go and show your horse, but also to have a great time with your friends and family during the event. The ORHA has a lot of great, ambitious, and dedicated riders and our youth team is outstanding! For the past 2 years, we’ve had so many new members, including new youth members! Being in the youth club is spectacular because it doesn’t matter if it’s your first horse show or your 100th horse show, you get the group bond right away!”

BROOKLYN SHANNON “I have been a part of the ORHA for a

little over a year now, since I decided to switch over to reining. I can say that it has been the best decision that I have made. It is a great association to show under, with well-run shows, great facilities, and an amazing support system of people. There are multiple ‘levels’ of classes to compete in, making it a fantastic association to begin your reining journey with. As I mentioned before, there is a great support system of people. I think these people are what make the Ontario reining shows so much fun. They are all so inclusive and friendly, and you never feel like an outsider when you are with them. This makes a huge difference

Landon Brown

when you are just beginning in a new disci- pline. As a youth member, there are also many opportunities to connect with other kids your age and to get involved through the ORHyA. We have tons of fun together and we have awesome fundraising events at each show, such as the futurity squares and 50/50 tickets. Overall, the ORHA is proba- bly my favourite association to show under, with great shows and great people.”

LANDON BROWN “Part of the reason why I love the sport

of reining so much is because of the com- munity. The ORHA and ORHyA are such a welcoming and supporting community, and provide so many opportunities for their members. The ORHA and ORHyA not only help their riders improve their riding skills, they also help them improve their people skills. I know personally that the trainers and other members showing and riding have helped me improve my riding skills by help- ing me through a rut and giving me con- structive criticism. Being a part of the ORHyA has helped to teach me leadership skills by allowing me the opportunity to be Vice President and President in the past 4 years. It has also taught me a sense of re- sponsibility and hard work. Being a part of the ORHyA has also provided me the oppor- tunity of gaining school scholarships to help pay for my future tuition costs. These are just a few reasons why I love the ORHA and the ORHyA as well as the sport of reining.”

CAELIN COLYER “Things that I like about the ORHA

and the ORHyA… The community comes together to put amazing shows on for every- one to enjoy and have fun showing their horses, while also learning a thing or two about the sport of reining, and the extra bonus of potentially winning some money and prizes, while having fun!” ORHA is honoured to have such a

great group of youth riders representing them, and is proud of their accomplish- ments.
