Laura Chapot’s Win in the $75,000 Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Closes 2024 Lake Placid Horse Shows
Win Closes Out Lake Placid’s Famed Grass Field With New All-Weather Footing Being Installed for Next Year
Lake Placid, NY – July 8, 2024 – An emotional win by Laura Chapot and Chandon Blue in the $75,000 Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix closed the 55th annual Lake Placid Horse
Shows
(LPHS), Sponsored by Bainbridge Farms, LLC, and Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC. With the an- nouncement
that Lake
Placid’s Grand Prix Ring will be converted to an all- weather surface for next year, Chapot’s win, her eighth Grand Prix win in Lake Placid, seemed fitting for the horse show’s final class on the grass. Located in the historic
Olympic town of Lake Placid, NY,
the annual
LPHS offer two weeks of exciting equestrian competi- tion in a setting no other horse show can match, sur- rounded by breathtaking views of the Adirondack Mountains and the chance to enjoy countless activities that help make the Lake Placid Horse Shows, “The Best Two Weeks of a Horse- man’s Summer!” LPHS
hosts competitions for riders of all levels and ages rang- ing from young children on polished ponies, to glisten- ing hunters, to Olympic vet- erans aboard their grand prix mounts. When Chapot, last to
try the 16-effort, first-round course designed by Nick Granat, entered the ring, the only clean round had been turned by 18-year-old Mia Bagnato. Chapot forced the jump-off by going clean on her 19-year-old mount. Bag- nato then rode Ballyoskill Big Bucks to a clean ride over
the eight-effort
tiebreaker course, finishing in 36.581 seconds. Chapot followed on Chandon Blue and blazed to a clean ride in 34.286 seconds to earn the emotional win. “With only one clean,
being the last one to go is not really the best position to be in because you put a little extra pressure on your- self to go clean,” Chapot said. “I just tried to focus and put in the best round I could.
“My horse is a little
tired after two weeks up here, but he tried his heart out. He really wanted to win this class. This is the last time we’re out here on the grass which makes me re- ally sad. He loves the grass field, we love the grass field and to win this means a little extra because of that.” Coupled with her sec-
ond-place finish in the first week’s $75,000 Grand Prix of Lake Placid, Chapot earned the Richard & Diana Feldman Perpetual Trophy for Excellence, given to the rider with the best combined performances
in Lake
Placid’s two Grand Prix events, for a record fifth time.
Prior to the Grand
Prix, Mia Bagnato won both the Deeridge Farms 1.35m Junior/Amateur
Classic and the Eastern Hay and
Grain Junior/Amateur
Jumper 1.45m
Jumper
Classic, a member event of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Se- ries. Bagnato rode Ariso to the win in the 1.35m Clas- sic, finishing with two clean
rounds and the fastest jump- off time of 34.087 seconds. Brian Sweeney placed sec- ond on Zappa, with third going to Corinne Sweeney on Tara M. In the 1.45m Classic,
Bagnato turned in the only double clear to take the win on Florida N, while also placing second with Cor- diamo. She and Florida N were clean in the jump-off with a time of 39.381 sec- onds, and she had four faults and a time of 35.387 sec- onds on Cordiamo. Third went to Michael Rothpletz who had the only other clean first round on Un- touched and finished the jump-off with four faults and a time of 40.209 sec- onds.
Also prior to the
Grand Prix was the horse show’s Kathy Scholl Equi- tation Classic. Natalie Gan- nett,
trained by Emma
Fletcher, topped a field of 10 finalists who earned their way into the Classic based on their finishes in equi- tation classes over the horse shows’ two weeks. Mia
Frigon placed second with Mia Bagnato taking third and Emma Hakim finishing fourth.
Sunday also featured
the horse shows’ annual Doggie Costume Contest presented by Man and Beast, and The Clothes Horse Parade of Champi- ons.
Laura Chapot also
claimed the win on Chan- don Blue in the $30,000 FarmVet Jumper Classic on Friday. Chapot was one of four entries from the field of 15 to qualify for the jump- off by riding clean over the 15-effort, first-round course. She was the first to return for
the
tiebreaker course and pi- loted Chandon Blue, a 19- year-old Oldenburg, to a clean ride in 34.474 seconds to set the mark to beat. None of the remaining
entries could catch Chapot’s score, with the closest being Brian Moggre and MTM Vivre Le Reve, winners of the first week’s $75,000 Grand Prix of Lake Placid. They finished clean in
35.979 seconds to take sec- ond. Third went to David Raposa and Lingote de Oro RFB, who came home clean in 37.438 seconds, and fourth went to Mia Bagnato who finished with four jump-off faults and a time of 35.567 seconds on Bal- lyoskill Big Bucks. Cupid, owned by
