From Our Founder
Remembering August 1990
Hi there. Can you believe
that The Rider was bold enough to publish a front page story written by Margaret Boyd, with the headline “ Lyme Disease Poses Little Risk for Canadi- ans”? Well here we are 34 years later and Lyme Disease is a big problem everywhere. The gov- ernment and science has to find a way to destroy these little demons. On July 1, 2007 in the district of Louyang, China, citi- zens were paid $125.00 for killing 2,000 flies. This form of eradication was used in China of the 1950’s. Do you think Cana- dians would do that for ticks?
In August 1990 the sixth
Canadian Carriage Driving Classic were promoting “Recap- ture the Romance”. It’s really hard to think like that at 40 below going to pick up some BMC bread, milk and cigarets at the local grocery store, way back about 1840 was romantic,Re- ally! Ya! I know I got it wrong.
Several columns ago I put
out a challenge to various fair boards. I thought that Westfield Village Hamilton would be an ideal place for a Western Horse Museum. So far not a word. Lots of memorabilia out there and folks looking for museum to call home.
Twenty students graduated
from the Kemptville College on May 24. All students received graduating certificates in the College’s Equestrian Program.
Via Tools of Mt. Bridges,
Ontario were manufacturing and selling 4 horse stock trailers for $3,919.00 Nowadays, with in- flation, that would be at least $1 million (kidding). Note, Via Trailers are still a regular adver- tiser with The Rider and we thank them for their long term business.
Our newly minted English Rider was gaining lots of ground with
the normal English set. It seems that this sector was waiting to be included as most other English equine publications catered to the well healed. We are still here the most other print publications are a thing of the past. We had lots to clip out and put in one’s scrap book. Print is more rele- vant today than ever.
Fairview Farms in Hornby,
Ontario were advertising their $1,000.00 added barrel race on August 25. The facility also of- fered a Registered Horse Auc- tion.
Researchers at the Univer-
sity of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine were ex- ploring a new treatment for Uterine Infections with an An- tibiotic.
Sally Van Dyke, of the
Arabian Racing Association of Ontario, updated The Riders readers on their efforts to pro- mote and race Arabian Horses. It seems that their efforts were in vain as it appears that today, 34 years later, there no race tracks. It seams that the Arabian Horses in Ontario are not as active as they used to be.
The Western Rider et all
were proud to announce that the publisher/ owner Aidan W. Finn was elected to the American Horse Publications board of di- rectors.
Kelly Smith was President
of the Ontario Amateur Quarter Horse Association. the associa- tion was doing well under Kelly’s presidency. Always good news coming from them through their monthly news column. Print media today in the crazy world of electronic media are still dominant in the world. The Rider has prospered in a tight knit horse world of today. While the big shot daily and weekly newspapers have been filing for bankruptcy protection at all lev- els.

The Ontario Rodeo Associ-
ation were promoting several rodeos in the province for the fall fairs.
The Wrangler Jeans Rodeo
Showdown was scheduled for October 4-7 with an expected 30 to 40,000 spectators. It was being moved on fast forward by the ORA . The event was held in Scottsdale, Arizona. President Terry Dunk had great expectations that
would have a successful year. The Ontario Barrel Racing
Association advertised their par- ticipation in the Milton Fair on September 22. The Club were competing for added purses from $50.00 to $1,000.
Quarter Racing Owners of
Ontario, under the guidance of Gary McNichol and a very tal- ented board of directors, were doing very well with entries at their races at Picov this summer. The fall racing calendar was fill- ing fast with entries.
Wahl were advertising
their Sterling 2 Horse Trimmer at $139.95.
Absorbine were covering
all bases with their ads in The Rider. They featured pictures of most Western Horses. Smart ad- vertisers.
CoolMax, a Polo shirt made from a fibre called CoolMax, was taking its place among other polo shirts. It is a fibre created to be cooler, no style but cooler. You know what I mean.
Ford / New Holland were
taking out full page ads on their new people designed tractors.
The Canadian Champi-
onship Quarter Horse Show Entry Application Form was a full page ad in The Rider for their three day show on October 3-7.
My Turn. It seems that the Calgary
Stampede is getting unwanted world wide publicity. The dreaded Chuck Wagon Race has claimed the lives of two horses. A steer was euthanized at the event. I will bet the SPCA and

PETA and other animal oriented organizations will be calling for an end to these events. Having said that, this years
Stampede saw record attendance. I just checked my old story
the ORA
file and it seems that I have every column I have written. Can you believe I have been writing this column since April 2004. That is a lot writing. No complaints or people calling me out as a liar as other reporters are experiencing by abusive readers. Thanks! Never once has the Canadian Quarter Horse Journal, The West- ern Rider or The English Rider been challenged for what it had written.
It has been a long hot and in
some places a very wet summer. I hope your animals have managed to take it all in stride.
Enjoy the rest of your sum-
mer and hope that the fall shows will be more tolerable, weather wise.

As we enter 55 years of pub-
lishing The Rider, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. All the horse clubs, organi- zations and the individual people who have supported us over the past 54 years. In the beginning it was just
word of mouth and silly idle chit chat on the corral rail. Then we came along. Supporters have ho- noured us as some of the real peo- ple behind the absolute success of the Canadian Western Horse In- dustry. At the beginning we were the ONLY publication, then lots of copycats came along that were going to set the industry on its ears. They FAILED. We are still the ONLY one. I and all our contributors and
those especially the pioneers of our industry from Day One need a big thank you and a tip of the old Stetson for being with all of us.
Many times I could have
pulled the plug., but thanks to those genuine horse lovers that have left us over the past 54 years

and those that are still here THANK YOU! I thank them specially for
working with us to stay afloat. We never once applied for govern- ment help. “WE” did it together. Several publications got all kinds of government support. “WE” did it ourselves. WE got no hand outs. They are gone and we are here! Thank you it has been fabu-
lous ride indeed. Remember you are responsi-
ble to deal with child, spousal, elder and animal abuse. If you don’t know who to call, call us, We can help, If you are struggling to feed your animals we can put you in good hands.
