COVER STORY STAYING POSITIVE AND GET We hear from UK tiling solutions specialists BAL on how the company has
As Britain was hit by the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, BAL has been entertaining and informing fixers, contractors and specifiers, helping them to stay connected and also giving them the tools and support to ensure they get back to work at full speed once the lockdown eases.
The Stay Positive, Back Stronger campaign has proved to be extremely popular with people from all parts of the tiling industry.
As well as staff working remotely to provide technical advice, specifications, product support, order management and assistance, plus sales and marketing support, BAL has produced a series of other services straight to people’s homes – including some light entertainment.
Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing and Customer Services explains: “From the start our plan was to stay visible, stay connected and stay available to all our customers and end-users. Even when working from home, we have had people available in all our departments to answer queries, take orders and provide support.
“It’s was and still is a difficult time for us all. We wanted to support anyone we can in the tiling industry, in any small way, to stay entertained, connected and feel more positive to maintain our collective mental health.
“If we could then share some of our knowledge in terms of business skills to help fixers get back on their feet and allow their businesses to be even stronger after lockdown, we would try and help in any way we can.”

Terry Cooper, Service Specialist at Topps Tiles, North Finchley branch, said the A-Z of Tiling has proved an invaluable training guide.
Perhaps one of the most popular series BAL has run during the lockdown has been its A-Z of Tiling. Originally produced in 2008, this has been renewed and updated with added insights from BAL’s technical and support teams.

He said: “I have watched all the videos and every Monday have downloaded each A-Z guide and have put them onto index cards which I keep with me in store. They are a really good reference guide to all the different terminology around tiling and are particularly useful for those of us who come from a non-tiling background.”
