TEXTURED TILES MAXIMUM IMPACT

Sian O’Neill, Head of Marketing at Topps Tiles, gives some top tips on how to have fun with textured tiles.

Over the last few years, textured tiles have increased in popularity with a greater variety becoming available. Whether it’s a rippled surface or a fabric design, texture can catch the eye as a decorative feature and add to the look, style and functionality of a room.

Creating Contrast

With a wide range of textured tiles on the market, there are endless options for customers to explore, especially when it comes to the subtle textures and surface details that can give a truly modern aesthetic. From intricate geometric shapes to fabric patterns, textured tiles can give homeowners maximum design impact, all with the practical benefits of a hardwearing tile.

For example, a scratched-effect porcelain floor tile such as the Abrasio can add the ‘wow factor’ by bringing an industrial style into the room. The latest technology mixes glossy and matt glazes to achieve the scratched effect with a light sheen. Professionals in the industry should consider pairing this with stand-out, luxury brass trims from the Topps Tiles Foundry range. The contrast achieves a unique, striking look and provides the opportunity to showcase your design credentials whilst upselling.

Adding Depth

Some textured tiles have the benefit of giving extra depth to walls by providing a 3D effect. Largely a new concept which became feasible with the advent of three-dimensional printing, these feature tiles can be found with scoring, ridging and waves and striations.

By adding an intriguing depth of character to what was previously a two-dimensional surface, tiles such as the Swave Structured White Tile are brilliant for creating a feature area of interest, especially in the bathroom. Try mixing the decor with a plainer tile to disperse the pattern and incorporate textured borders.

Fun Fabrics

The fabric effect is one of the hottest trends in interior design and ceramic tiles are now available that resemble real textiles, with a highly decorative effect. These products are designed to delight our touch as well as our eyes, with effects that reproduce the weaves of the cloth.

The Fabrix range from Topps Tiles offers modern boutique elegance, combining the warm look of woven materials with the structure of a linear décor. This tile is perfect for all living spaces, a tartan décor would work particularly well as a feature wall in a living or dining area for a contemporary look, or used alongside a plain tile on the floor for maximum coverage. It also lends itself well to commercial environments, such as bars and restaurants, thanks to its durable nature.

Functionality

While texture can add style, variety and creativity to walls, it can also be cleverly used in tile design to serve an important

safety functionality as well. This is especially true with non- slip floor tiles, which have various patterns and styles of raised textured bumps to cause resistance.

However, this functionality does not have to come at the expense of style. There are countless slip-resistant tile options available for a wide range of applications – from heavy duty, to shopping centres, through to hotel receptions and individual homes around the UK. At Topps Tiles, we use Pendulum Test Values (PTV) to determine the slip resistance of our tiles. A Pendulum testing machine is used which measures the friction caused when a simulated sole material passes across the surface of the tile, giving it a PTV. The measurement determines how slip resistant the tile is, so be sure to check out the PTV rating before you recommend the tile to your customers.
