WHAT’S NEW? YESTERDAY’S TILES FORM

TOMORROW’S HERITAGE Produced by a glaze which can be traced back to 16th-century Iran or Persia, Persian Glazes is a collection of deep, glossy tiles, with a rich history and heritage.

Offering bold and vibrant as well as more subtle options, the tiles are a collaboration between maker Noreen Jaafar and designer Corinne Twining, aimed squarely at creative designers.

In this age of high consumer demand and, as a result, mass production techniques, tile showrooms can seldom rely on offering clients exclusive handmade tiles. But, more and more, clients are looking for originality. This is where the importance of Persian Glazes’ story comes to light.

The original tile technique was kept a closely guarded family secret, only passed down from father to son. This makes it all the more remarkable that Noreen mastered and developed the technique for domestic, commercial and exterior use in the 20th/21st century. The collection spans a palette of 17 colours, constrained by the predictability of their behaviour in the kiln, but designing within kiln and colour palette limits is a great discipline. It challenges both makers and designers to make the most of them, producing unique results for clients.

With the resurgence of interest in creative tiling in interior magazines and blogs, Persian Glazes provide a wonderful opportunity to bring art into interior and exterior spaces. Corinne’s simple contemporary designs produce exciting ‘building blocks’ for designers and were never intended to be confined to bathrooms and kitchens.

As internal or external murals for hotels, clubs and public spaces, they can be combined with mirror, stone, polished metal and amplified by clever lighting. In contrast, they can work just as well as small, stunning points of interest if subjected to value engineering.

Need inspiration? Look at Coletivo Muda, Athos Bulcao, Oscar Niemeyer, Alexandre Mancini and you will find another tile heritage, one which stretches from Portugal to Brazil. And today, think India Mahdavi, Smink Things , Mutina, Bert & May amongst many others. In good company, Persian Glazes are today’s and tomorrow’s tiles: inspired design stands the test of time.
