H&S NORTH

This will be followed by a seminar on the impact of the revised sentencing guidelines on top management commitment, which will be delivered by former HSE policy advisor Neal Stone.

The day will conclude with a panel debate session, which will question to what extent should senior leaders influence organisational culture. This debate will feature Neal Stone and British Safety Council chairman Lawrence Waterman OBE.

Day two will begin with Park HS occupational health and hygienist partner Clare Forshaw on promoting health and wellbeing within the workplace. It will be followed by Assurity Consulting director Greg Davies talking about how to build wellbeing in the workplace before the final session delivered by Mates in Mind on the significance of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

HSM KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE Another well-received feature of the event is the re- branded HSM Knowledge Exchange theatre in which panels of experts take part in interactive question and answer sessions with the audience on a range of pertinent health and safety topics. The theatre will be chaired by Louis Wustemann who is an experienced health and safety journalist, formerly editor of several health & safety magazines for 15 years.

Key sessions include lessons from in the introduction of ISO 45001 where delegates can come and hear what they can learn from the gap analyses and systems audits to date and what their organisation needs to do to meet the standard’s new requirements. It will also look at the criticism levelled by the HSE against non- statutory standards and ‘blue tape’.

Work at height is one of the high-hazard activities that takes place on most organisations’ premises. Even when contractors carry out the work, the liability for any accident may be shared by the client. The HSM Knowledge Exchange will cover the simple steps you can take to check anyone working at height is competent and properly equipped for the job.

The duty to ensure workers are trained to manage work risks that cannot be controlled in other ways is one of the basic requirements of UK law. The specialist panel will advise on good practice and how to ensure you get value from training programmes.

The theatre will also play host to an interactive session that will explore the use of the P.E.A.C.E. model in incident investigation and the principles of what good witness interviews look like. It will also explore the concept of bias, and how to deal with difficult interviewees.

The final session on day one will examine how the past 10 years have been characterised by a streamlining of the statute book as redundant regulations have been removed. But for the regulations that remain, penalties have become harsher. What is the future for the UK’s health and safety regulations when the country is no longer tied directly to the EU’s lawmaking structure?
