MENTAL HEALTH & STRESS

thinking ‘this doesn’t apply to me’ and help them understand that it could potentially happen to anyone.

In the first training session, Mike began by sharing his personal testimony of mental health issues with the group before asking the cohort of 12 members of the Millcroft team to share their experiences, drawing on their own family and friendship groups.

“Of the 12 people in the room,” says Mike, “eight had been personally affected by someone they knew taking their own life or attempting suicide. Once that had been absorbed and acknowledged by the group, the mood of the training room completely changed. Everyone had entered that room with a slightly irritated and defensive attitude to taking part in the training but the personal relevance and knowledge that poor mental health is such a common, diverse and devastating problem transformed the level of engagement.”

An important part of the mental health programme at Millcroft has been a commitment to ensuring that the whole team receives the training so that everyone knows what to look out for in themselves and others too. This includes the senior team and site management roles.

Mike continues: “The leadership team was on board from the outset and our mental health champions have been appointed from senior management and site management roles so that employees can turn to someone in a position of authority who has been trained to listen, understand and signpost them to help if they need it.

“Ensuring the leadership team is not just on board but involved with the training also reiterates the ‘this can happen to anyone’ message. It ensures the whole team trusts that they can share their concerns in confidence and be understood, whether their concerns relate to their own mental health or a colleague.”

ONGOING PROGRAMME Once the training has been rolled out to the whole team, mental health will continue to be a regular topic in health and safety sessions and toolbox talks at Millcroft, along with leaflets and posters on site.

Millcroft has already extended the programme to its customers and delivery partners too. The first mental health workshop has already been held at Millcroft’s training centre for delegates from construction contractors and building owners, helping to keep the conversation going across the delivery chain. Following the success of the first session, a further two of these customer mental health workshops are now in the diary.

“We have come a long way in a short time since the idea of mental health training was first mooted,” adds Billy Jones, Director at Millcroft. “But we know this is a journey with no end-point; it needs to be a continuous process of raising awareness and encouraging trust.

“We can’t protect our colleagues from the stresses and strains that could be damaging to their mental health

but we can let them know we’re here to support them with empathy and practical steps to getting help if they need it.”
