I don’t think you’ll need three guesses to gauge what the agenda for this editor’s voice will be.
In December 2019, reports began to emerge from the Chinese capital of the Hubei province, Wuhan, about a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that can affect the lungs and airways of its host, causing, in the most serious of cases, severe acute pneumonia. Three months later it has become an international epidemic spanning 176 countries and territories.
At the time of writing, there have been more than 220,000 laboratory- confirmed cases of the disease, sadly resulting in more than 9000 deaths. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Neighbouring countries such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain have closed their borders, with tens of millions of European citizens on lockdown in their homes, whilst the USA has banned all flights leading to and from Europe for the foreseeable future. It is not hyperbolic to suggest we are entering into unchartered waters.
Despite the spread and severity of this infection being the biggest cause for alarm, we must also pay significant attention to people’s mental health during these uncertain times. The level of anxiety caused by the unknown should not be underestimated and employers would do well to take the necessary steps to support employees in this regard.
The government has now published guidelines for employers and businesses on how to cope with the coronavirus. They explain what efforts organisations of any size can make if someone suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 has been in the workplace. The infection, it is believed, can spread to people who are nearby (within 2 metres) and it is possible that someone may become infected by touching a surface, object or the hand of an infected person that has been contaminated with respiratory secretions and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes.

The health and safety industry’s primary role over these coming months will be to advise and support UK businesses in managing the scale, damage and levels of uncertainty the virus is likely to bring. We hope to help steer a steady course through the depths of these murky waters.
On behalf of the Tomorrow’s Health & Safety team, we wish you all the best and implore you all to stay safe, listen to the expert advice and look after one another.
