FEATURE

that shield or insulate the work area.” Industrial thermal curtains put that principle into practice. By enclosing occupied workstations, packing lines, or assembly areas within insulated curtain walls, employers can create localised comfort zones, sometimes called micro- climates, that hold a reasonable working temperature without heating the cubic metres of empty air above. Where a facility needs to divide a larger space into separately managed areas, warehouse isolation curtains extend the same principle across the wider floor plan.

“MICRO-CLIMATE ZONING CAN IMPROVE WORKER COMFORT WHILE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING THE ENERGY REQUIRED TO HEAT LARGE INDUSTRIAL SPACES.”

The appeal is twofold. Workers get a compliant, comfortable environment at floor level. The business heats a fraction of the volume, cutting energy cost and the associated carbon, which matters as commercial operators work toward the UK’s legally binding 2050 Net Zero target and tightening building energy standards. Thermal curtain systems deliver this without permanent construction, and can be repositioned as layouts change.

SPECIFY RESPONSIBLY

Two points matter for any H&S manager considering this. First, thermal performance in the UK is measured by U-value in W/m²K, not the R-value numbering used in US product literature, so compare like with like. Second, and more importantly, any internal partitioning must be designed around the building’s existing fire strategy. Curtains must not obstruct escape routes or fire detection, and must not impede sprinkler coverage under BS EN 12845, in line with duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Specify fabric certified to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B and, where relevant, BS EN 13501-1 Euroclass, and involve whoever owns the fire risk assessment before installation.

AKON Curtains Limited supplies industrial PVC partitioning systems, including insulated curtain walls, strip curtains, and warehouse divider curtains, across the UK, Ireland, and broader European markets. Drawing on operational experience from its US parent group’s installation base and 15 years of industrial PVC specifier expertise, AKON Curtains Limited works with facilities and safety teams to create compliant, energy-efficient working environments.
