and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2015–16. Government fire statistics for England show more than 4,000 fires were caused by faulty appliances and leads in 2014–15 alone.

The most effective way of identifying defective equipment and preventing electrocution or fire is through formal inspection and testing programmes such as PAT testing and Electrical Installation Condition Reports.

Richard Slade from Seaward said: “With the tragic events at Grenfell Tower last month and other recent incidents like the solar panel fire in London’s Bow Wharf flats, people are

taking electrical safety testing much more seriously.

“Regular testing and preventative maintenance are the safest way to protect lives and property.

“Carrying out comprehensive Risk Assessments allows duty holders to plan their inspection and testing regimes guarding against the hazards posed to persons and property.

“These inspections & tests can also tackle the growing problem of counterfeit devices and poor product recall processes.”

Many insurance companies require PAT testing to be performed as part of their policy terms and conditions.

Duty holders can refer to Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), the HSE Memorandum of Guidance and the IET code of practice (4th Edition) for guidance.

“These regulations provide sound, common sense advice based on industry experience and the electrical safety needs of the business community,” Richard added.
