DAY IN THE LIFE A DAY IN THE LIFE

Each month we catch up with a health & safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with Simon Rehill, General Manager of Pulsar Instruments Plc.

1

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES? As General Manager I’m responsible for the smooth

running of the company day-to-day and for seeing us successfully into the future. In addition, I’m also responsible for delivering our training courses for H&S professionals, helping customers choose the right noise & vibration measurement equipment and for growing our world-wide distribution network.

2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY? By accident really. I just happened to be in the right

place at the right time when the opportunity to come and join the company arose. I’d been planning to go overseas to skydive on a bit of a midlife gap year and then damaged the cartilage in my shoulder so had to look for a more earth-based career opportunity. I originally joined as UK and Export Sales Manager and it’s gone on from there.

3

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB? I’ve worked in various different companies in the

manufacturing sector for over 22 years, where I’ve been involved in many aspects of work including business management, product development, and sales. I’ve been lucky to work in many places around the world from USA to Russia and experience their different working cultures.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY? Aside from the general day-to-day management

duties I’m often the first port of call for any telephone enquiries from potential customers; I talk through people’s noise at work issues and help advise them on what they can do about them or what they need to help solve their problems and protect their workforce from hearing loss.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR PROUDEST WORK MOMENT?

I am extremely proud to lead a fantastic team of industry professionals in the manufacture and supply

of sound and vibration meters and noise-activated warning signs. It’s Pulsar Instruments 50th birthday this year and I’m immensely proud to be part of both its history and its future.

As a Yorkshire lad, I’m also particularly proud that all our noise measurement equipment is designed, developed and manufactured in Yorkshire, UK.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? In a nutshell it’s being able to meet so many

interesting people from different types of companies and feeling like I’ve made a difference to them. One week I can be training health and safety professionals in a University, the next week I can be in a factory trying to find the best solutions to help solve a company’s noise at work problem. It’s really varied and diverse and keeps me on my toes too.

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? Paperwork. Need I say more.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

Take every opportunity to get training as early on in your career as possible as this will set the foundations for your future knowledge.

9

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND? My main passion outside of work is skydiving.

I’m a qualified tandem instructor and skydive most weekends for pleasure. I’m also a keen biker and surfer and just love spending time outdoors.

10

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU LIKE IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

I enjoy what I’m doing now, but if I had to pick something it would probably be to focus more on the noise and vibration consultancy side of things so I can travel around more and go into companies and really make a difference to how they do things.
