Hello and a warm welcome to the January/ February issue of Tomorrow’s Health and Safety

Shortly before the publication of this issue, HSE published a summary of statistics for health and safety at work in Great Britain for 2017/18. It

revealed that over the course of 12 months there were 1.4 million cases of work-related ill health (new or long-standing), 0.6 million work-

related stress, depression or anxiety cases and 0.5 million work-related musculoskeletal disorder cases.

Add to this the fact that there were 555,000 self-reported non-fatal injuries to workers and 144 workers losing their lives at work in 2017/18. These statistics, despite the clear improvements since the introduction of

the Health and Safety at Work Act, paint a vivid picture of how much work remains to be done in a bid to make our workplaces safer.

health & safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable organisations of all sizes to provide safe and health workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, we would hope to see HSE’s annual report statistics improve even further by the end of 2019.

Then of course, there’s the ‘B’ word. Despite collaborative efforts from HSE, NEBOSH and the British Safety Council (BSC) in contributing to
