CHSA SCHEME TO PUSH BACK ON

‘BROWN BOX’ PRODUCT The Panel managing the CHSA’s Accreditation Scheme for Plastic Refuse Sacks has voted to enhance the criteria for membership.

WHAT I LEARNT THIS MONTH Liz Kentish

Being proud of achieving something at work is a feeling that tends to be pushed aside. Instead of giving ourselves a pat on the back for a job well done, we find ourselves muttering; ‘well, I was only doing my job’. It can be very easy not to realise the impact of your contribution, especially if you’ve worked on a project for a long period of time.

I had such a moment recently. One of our clients has built a new shipping container terminal in Turkey. Before the teams had begun constructing and preparing the terminal, I had been out there delivering training programmes on leadership and development. When I first went a few years ago, the build for the terminal was just underway, but on each subsequent visit I was amazed at the progress they were making.

The terminal launched for business at the end of last year; but I had not fully thought about its operational success until just a few weeks ago when I was delivering further training. It was only when I saw it finished for the first time that I realised the part I’d played.

I did not draw up the plans nor lay any bricks. You could say that, in the grand scheme of things, my input was minimal at best, but as I looked at the busy container port, I really did feel a sense of pride that I was part of the team and able to share in our client’s success.

As well as having to pass a series of rigorous audits conducted by the Scheme’s Independent Inspector to gain admittance, from 1st January 2017 all new Scheme members must meet a minimum threshold for the proportion manufactured of CHSA Accredited Product.

“Our goal is to relentlessly drive up standards in the industry,” explained Mike Stubbs, Chairman of the Accreditation Scheme Panel. “Buyers of ‘brown box’ products are taking a chance. There are no rules governing the labeling of this type of product so there’s no way of being sure you get what you think you’ve bought. Our ambition is whenever a buyer purchases plastic refuse, compactor or wheelie bin sacks they can be absolutely certain that ‘what’s on the box is in the box’. The decision by the Panel is another step in this direction.”

New members will have to produce at least 10% by tonnage of all plastic refuse, compactor and wheelie bin sacks under the CHSA Marque in the

NEW NORTHWOOD

ACQUISITION Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd have successfully completed the purchase of the trade and assets of Freedom Paper Converters Ltd, based in Birmingham.

The acquired asset will now be trading as Freedom Paper Products Ltd (FPP) supplying embossed and laminated conventional toilet rolls as well as kitchen towel to their existing customer base.

Freedom Paper Products Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd, will operate autonomously from its site in Birmingham. The

first year of membership. That means the product will have to be labelled in compliance with the Scheme and regularly audited to ensure it is fit for purpose. In the second year of membership the threshold will increase to 20% and then 30% in the third and future years.

The CHSA’s Independent Inspector audits the products within the Scheme using the British Standards Institute’s Drop Test, during which the sack is filled to a pre-defined weight then dropped from a specific height and assessed. Ten sacks are tested in this way and only if the batch passes is it marked suitable for the ‘duty’ category in question. The labels are reviewed to ensure there is full traceability to manufacturer and batch and ‘what’s on the box is in the box’. Martin Yates also audits members’ quality systems to ensure they are as vigilant with their own systems as with the products audited by the Inspector.

Scheme Members that fail to meet the requirements may be ultimately expelled, a sanction not required in recent years as they value their membership.

business will continue to be led by Mr Mohammad Ali, alongside the Northwood management team.

Paul Fecher, Northwood Chairman, commented “This acquisition brings additional resource to our market offering and continues the focus of the Northwood businesses to the UK hygienic tissue sector. Freedom Paper Products Ltd complements our existing converting facilities in Meltham, Penygroes and Telford”.
