HEALTHCARE & HOSPITAL FACILITIES

IS YOUR BOILER READY FOR WINTER?

Carl Webb, Sales Director at Andrews Sykes helps healthcare facilities to prepare their heating systems for winter.

As the weather starts to get cooler, healthcare facilities need to ensure that their boiler equipment is ready for winter, as if this fails, they can be left without any hot water or central heating. This is especially important in care homes and wards as those most vulnerable to temperature changes must be kept as comfortable as possible.

Elderly care home residents can be particularly susceptible to the cold, with winter months increasing the likelihood of colds and flu, in addition

to more serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia. Central heating must be set to a comfortable temperature of at least 24°C and hot water must be stored at a temperature of at least 60°C and distributed at a minimum of 50°C, to prevent risks from Legionella.

It is equally important to keep hospital patients warm during their recovery period. Failure to maintain a suitable temperature throughout the winter can result in broken sleep, leading to diminished rest and a

slower recovery. Often, patients are dressed in gowns and staff may have a bare arm policy for cleanliness, therefore a temperature of 24°C for wards and 21°C-23°C for waiting and treatment rooms is recommended.
