THE CONNECTED WORKPLACE

A recent What Workers Want survey revealed that a quarter of UK

office staff feel their workspace actually reduces their productivity, a shocking figure, says NFS Technology’s Luis de Souza.

It’s sobering news, wherever you are in the world, with business costs perpetually rising – and real estate leading the charge – every organisation absolutely requires workspace that’s designed to encourage effective (and profitable) working.

Productivity has been a worldwide issue for some time. Growth in global output for every worker declined in 2015, and is expected to moderate at 1.5% in 2016.

So if workers are unhappy with their workspaces, what do they actually like about the way they are designed, and how can facility designers build on that?

BASIC COMFORTS Basic comforts unsurprisingly top

the list when an office gets it right: comfort, lighting and temperature. Length of commute also has a big impact on worker satisfaction, 86% of respondents said it is most important to them.

“86% OF RESPONDENTS SAID LENGTH OF

WORKER SATISFACTION.”

Significantly, half of workers agreed that if the internal design of their office matched their ‘ideal’, it would drive up their productivity levels. Nearly a third like to work from different places in the office, and

almost half (48%) find it crucial to have space where they can collaborate with colleagues.

As facility designers know, we’re using workspace differently these days, thanks to three factors that present both opportunties and challenges:

Multigenerational workers – up to five generations can be working together today, with widely-differing work style preferences. One big factor is the arrival in the workplace of millennials, who live their life on mobile and social media.

Technological advances – in the last decade, we’ve seen huge advances in technologies that promote activity- based working and collaboration. But because many workspaces have gained technologies piecemeal,
