WASHROOMS SMARTER, GREENER, CLEANER

Changing consumer preferences and an increasing focus on health and wellbeing have seen progressive changes in the washroom recently. The use of smart technologies and more sustainable solutions is reshaping the way they are designed, managed, and maintained, explains Kimberly- Clark Professional.

Today facilities managers find themselves with a wealth of innovation available to integrate new technologies and systems that enhance user experience and improve hygiene standards.

Automated taps, sensor-operated soap dispensers and touchless hand towel dispensers are becoming more common, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and promoting better hygiene regardless of the environment. With consumers increasingly conscious of the environmental footprint of washroom products, eco-friendly alternatives such as recycled toilet paper, controlled-use hand towels and biodegradable hand soaps are growing in prominence.

Maintenance efficiencies Kimberly-Clark Professional has been focused on using new technology and innovation to make the life of the facility manager that much easier. One of the biggest ‘bug bears’ of washroom maintenance teams is having to act quickly when soap, hand towel or toilet paper dispensers have run out and need replacing. The Kimberly-Clark Professional ICON rolled hand towel dispenser collection features visual lighting cues giving a clear signal when a dispensing unit needs to be refilled, avoiding unnecessary time checking by staff.

Innovative high-capacity systems for toilet tissue, hand towel and skincare ensure less refills are needed, and a continuous supply is maintained. The Scott Rolled Hand Towel for the ICON system is the longest hand towel roll available, providing 380 metres of paper towel per roll. With the replacement-roll feature, cleaning teams can load a new roll whilst the old roll is still in use, meaning that changeover times and re-visits are kept to a minimum.

Smart touchless technology With ongoing staffing challenges in the FM sector, the need for easy and infrequent servicing of washroom systems is essential. The Kimberly-Clark Professional ICON rolled hand towel dispenser requires three times less servicing than the leading competitor’s standard folded hand towel dispenser. A single set of batteries can last for more than 150,000 hand towel dispenses, and dampened hinges make changeouts effortless, with a smooth, one-handed operation. The ICON dispenser’s Direct Drive Technology also makes the units more efficient, with 99.9% jam-free performance.

Electronic and touchless dispensing systems not only keep people moving quickly and easily through the washroom, but they provide minimal touchpoints. Dispensing consumables in a controlled way supports reduced usage and waste and a tidy and clean environment. The dual sensor technology featured on the ICON hand towel dispenser recognises partially torn sheets and presents a new sheet before dispenser issues occur offering a reliable and hygienic hand drying experience by precisely dispensing the amount of paper towels required. FMs also have the option to set the dispensed sheet length giving more control over consumption levels and waste.

Recycling and waste management Washroom waste management is a constant challenge for FMs. The RightCycle Programme by Kimberly-Clark Professional helps to eliminate waste by turning used hand towels back into new tissue products. RightCycle can help customers reduce their waste by up to 25% and increase their recycling rate by up to 5%. The programme also helps companies recycle their old cleaning-wipes or hand-towel dispensers which are sent to a recycling partner and turned back into new plastic products.

Sarah Bellamy, KCP Marketing Leader UK & Ireland, says: “The washroom sector is witnessing transformative trends driven by technological innovation, sustainability, and hygiene considerations. By embracing these trends and investing in innovative solutions, Kimberly-Clark meets the evolving needs of customers, contributing to user experience, and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for washroom facilities.
