KEIGHLEY People with dementia at Priory Hospital Keighley are now able to enjoy a sensory room, which offers gentle stimulation for sight, sound, touch, and smell.


Research studies have found that sensory rooms are effective in reducing moderate to severe agitation in dementia, and can sometimes be more effective than sedative medication. They also have the advantage of being ‘side-effect free’.

WORCESTER HOME Staff at a Worcester care home are celebrating after being awarded with the prestigious Worcestershire Dementia Standard for the second year running.


Northwick Grange Care Home has been awarded the sought-after Worcestershire County Council accreditation which rates care homes on their approach and successes when caring for residents with dementia.

The Quality Payment Inspections are carried out by local authorities around the country on care homes within their boroughs, involving an intensive two day examination of all services. Areas which come under scrutiny include the physical environment, the communication with the families of residents, the accuracy of all documentation and the general quality of what the home offers.

Rebecca Perrin, Hospital Director, said: “Being one of the best for dementia is a priority for Priory, and doing what we can to help people with the condition feel more safe and secure in their environment is hugely important to us.”


Traditionally, sensory rooms have been geared towards infants and those with learning disabilities such as autism. Advocates say they can enhance sensory skills, hand-eye co- ordination, reduce tension and support communication in young people. They also can be very useful in reducing agitation in these conditions.

The home, which is registered with the Care Quality Commission to care for up to 25 residents, was praised for developing a range of initiatives which help to stimulate and engage residents who live with dementia-type illnesses.


They include staff’s proactive relationships with families, their approach to mealtimes and nutrition and a programme of social activities. They also have a specially secured garden at the home in Old Northwick Lane which residents can enjoy in the spring and summer months.


Care manager Dawn Hooper said: “Some residents have been

The room distracts individuals from their distressing symptoms, which in turn leads to a reduction in incidents and a decrease in the need for medication.”
