Once you know what is required you need to conduct a technology and security assessment and put together a deployment schedule. Make sure you have support, contingency and documentation plans all tied down. You will be surprised how many organisations often forget one of these. Putting them firmly in place from the beginning avoids critical downtime.


To improve productivity mobile technology needs to provide frontline workers with the information they need when they need it. It should provide seamless access to back end record systems and push out only the data that is relevant to the user at any particular time. We refer to this as the mobile moment. The capability to work offline is also imperative, especially in rural and remote areas where there is still poor connectivity.


And now the good news IT departments and management are actually on board with bringing mobile technology into hospitals, healthcare systems and community care. But this comes with a caveat. Mobile technology is only going to work in healthcare if the approach is right, i.e. start with the needs of the frontline staff and work back from there. This then needs to be backed up by a solid plan to integrate it into existing workflows and patient-care processes.

Mobile is becoming pretty much ubiquitous in our lives and is ready to change the healthcare landscape in a very big way. Mobile technology really can create easier, faster access so that more people can receive better care. So don’t get caught in the ‘airlift’ trap. Make your mantra “it’s all about the frontline!”
