FEATURE “Without a vaccine or cure

in sight, it’s vital that hygiene measures are strengthened

and investments are made in technology that can support the fight against a second wave.”

Eliminating The Risk

As the world continues to live alongside COVID-19, Trudi Osborne, Marketing Manager at Airdri, explains how bolstering hygiene and infection control measures can eliminate the threat of infection in care homes.

Care homes have been hit hard by Coronavirus. The impact that COVID-19 has had on both staff and residents has been tragic, with too many lives lost, too soon.

According to a recent study, almost 40% of Coronavirus-related deaths in the UK have been care home residents. With research showing that any future outbreaks are up to 20 times more likely to occur in these settings, robust infection control has never been more important.

This, of course, isn’t news to those working in care homes. Cleanliness and hygiene have always been top priorities, as, by their very nature, the setting and its occupants are more susceptible to illness than others.

However, we find ourselves in unprecedented times, living alongside an extremely contagious virus. Without a vaccine or cure in sight, it’s vital that hygiene measures are strengthened in order to stand up to the coronavirus family, and investments are made in technology that can support the fight against a second wave.

TACKLING INVISIBLE THREATS

Even the most robust cleaning and hygiene efforts don’t guarantee protection against COVID-19. The invisible virus can stay at large on surfaces for hours, even days, making it difficult to remove all traces. This is where an air purifier can really make a difference, both in the washroom and beyond, tackling the germs that a cloth and bottle of disinfectant may not be able to reach.

Earlier this year, we launched our first washroom air purifier. Using the most advanced infection control technology, the unit kills 98.11% of all airborne and surface bacteria, and viruses including the coronavirus family, 24/7, 365 days a year. This means that any germs that have not been picked up by a cleaner, will be eradicated by the purifier.

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, we took the rapid decision to expand our range of air purifiers, to provide vital

protection for some of the environments most vulnerable to the virus. We now have three purifiers in the range, including the PSA model, which is ideal for more sensitive settings, such as care homes. The unit is completely silent, covering smaller areas of continuous occupation of up to 20m2. The unit not only kills airborne and surface viruses, including those within the coronavirus family, it also eliminates the bad odours that are caused by such bacteria. In an environment where infection and odour control are of the greatest importance, particularly during a global pandemic, the PSA unit offers complete protection.

THE SCIENCE

So, how do our units work? Germicidal irradiation by dual UV light kills micro-organisms by disrupting their DNA and removing their reproductive capabilities. This UV reacts with photocatalytic oxidation forming Hydroxyl Radicals which break down viruses, bacteria, moulds, fungi, and volatile organic compounds.

Targeted Ozone, produced by the specialist lamp in the Air Purifier, gets to the hardest to reach areas, breaking down contamination in the air and on all exposed surfaces. This Ozone damages the cell wall of micro-organisms, stopping reproduction and destroying the cell.

TIME TO INVEST

The installation of an air purifier will not only keep bacteria and viruses, including those in the coronavirus family, at bay, but it will also be a very visible reminder that the establishment in which it is housed takes the health and safety of its residents extremely seriously. From bedrooms and bathrooms, to communal lounges and dining areas, the purifier adds another level of protection against the virus, safeguarding residents, staff and visitors when they need it most.
