Reducing our disposable use

We’re all striving to reduce our use of disposable products, but how can this be achieved in places where paper is essential, such as the commercial kitchen, the industrial sector and the washroom, asks Steve Palmer from Tork manufacturer Essity?

We are all becoming highly conscious of what we’re throwing away.

Gone are the days when our old clothes, empty bottles, newspapers and food waste went straight in the nearest bin. Now we carefully segregate our rubbish and recycle everything that's remotely salvageable.

As a result, we are inevitably becoming more aware of the disposable products we use. Why employ a one-trip product when a reusable option exists?

In fact, it’s often the case that a disposable product is the safest, most hygienic, most convenient – or even the only option. No-one would seriously expect a hospital to reuse its surgical dressings or couch rolls, for example, since this would create a huge health and safety risk. And in the

commercial kitchen, various studies have highlighted the issues involved when using bacteria-infested dishcloths that have potentially been contaminated with substances such as meat juices and nut dust.

Commercial kitchens therefore tend to opt for disposable wipers on centrefeed rolls for cleaning down surfaces – often coloured blue since this helps them to stand out from foodstuffs such as flour and sugar. However, these rolls allow operatives to take out long lengths of paper, and often more than they need if they are accessing a wiper in a hurry.

The Tork Reflex Single Sheet Centrefeed is a good solution here because the dispenser gives out sheets of paper one at a time, resulting in consumption savings of up to 37%. The
