HYGIENE AND HOSPITALITY

Steve Nurdin, Marketing Manager for Cannon Hygiene UK, discusses how small businesses in the hospitality and leisure industries should approach hygiene matters.

In highly regulated industries like hospitality and leisure, having an exemplary hygiene policy in place is essential to ensure a good customer experience. Hygiene is directly related to how well a business operates, especially when handling food and where spot inspections can easily lead to closures for those who haven’t been vigilant.

In addition, the crowded market in leisure and hospitality means the importance of word of mouth cannot be underplayed in attracting repeat custom. A poor customer experience remains a big risk to a company’s reputation, as social media and review websites allow a dissatisfied customer to broadcast their opinions immediately to a large audience.

A poor washroom experience is undoubtedly a catalyst for negative reviews, with customers associating poor hygiene with the business as a whole. This online scrutiny can be particularly damaging for smaller hospitality businesses which may not have the resources to address bad press and can ultimately result in loss of custom and financial difficulty.

The job of implementing hygienic procedures and policies, however, often falls to employees as part of day-to-day tasks, risking inconsistency in cleaning practices. To ensure this can happen effectively, SMEs must develop a cost and time efficient approach to hygiene that allows high standards to be maintained easily.

COST VS. CUSTOMER Independent hospitality businesses should think carefully about their needs and implement hygiene processes that will work to improve efficiency, save money on bills, reduce wastage and limit the burden on staff.

A malodour is the first sign of poor hygiene. In the kitchen for example, blockages in pipework are a source of unpleasant smells, and can lead to costly maintenance bills. By using an automated system that releases enzymes throughout the day to break down any accumulation of grease and fats, SMEs can save themselves the cost of potentially expensive drain and pipe repairs, whilst ensuring the kitchen runs efficiently.

Similarly, specialist products can also be used to keep washroom pipework free from blockages and malodours. Using an intelligent water management system can also help a small business reduce water bills by regulating how much water is used to flush urinals.

Although all hospitality businesses will still need to carry out deep cleaning exercises throughout the year, automated hygiene solutions can reduce their frequency and labour intensity by working continuously in the background to keep a business’s kitchen and washroom facilities running like clockwork.

There are also areas where brands can save costs that have little or no impact on customers. Hand soap for example, can be a simple way for SMEs to reduce wastage and costs. By using automated dispensers, instead of the traditional pump-action, the exact amount of soap needed is delivered, ensuring waste is minimised as well as encouraging good hand hygiene across their premises.

Likewise, hand-drying solutions provide another channel for businesses to control their facility’s expenditure, by understanding usage and choosing a method that best suits their needs. A busy pub, for

example, may use a large volume of paper towels in one evening, increasing burden on staff who will need to replace them throughout the night and potentially result in excessive waste. Switching to an automated hand dryer, however, may prove much more economical.

STRIKING THE BALANCE The key is to strike a balance between going beyond the minimum hygiene requirements needed and freeing up employee resources to focus on other pressing daily tasks that affect customer experience. By utilising automated hygiene solutions where possible, a business can go a long way in sustaining a strong and enviable reputation.
