10 Questions with... Charlotte Kiss

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Charlotte Kiss, Communications & Media Manager at Principle Cleaning Services.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I had a Saturday job in retail at 16, and my first job after

university was in Account Management at an advertising agency I’d carried out work experience at during the summer holiday.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? When the opportunity arose to work for Principle I jumped

at the chance; it’s a really varied role and allows me the chance to meet lots of people in some rather lovely buildings. It really opened my eyes on how much depth the industry has.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Talkative, conscientious and empathetic.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

I would love to go on safari in India and see the Bengal Tigers. I could spend hours watching them when I take my son to the zoo so to see them – and other endangered species – in their natural habitat I think would be really special.

receptive and committed to continuous improvement. 7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

I'd spend at least six months travelling the world, as I wish I had when I was younger. My friends and family would also be given some and I’d make a sizeable donation to charity (for children and victims of domestic abuse in particular).

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? David Attenborough; I’m sure he would have a fascinating story or two to tell. Vic Hope; I really resonate with a lot of what she speaks about and appears to believe in. She’s someone I could be friends and have a good chat with. Finally, there'd be Lionel Richie, because what is a dinner party without music?

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think it looks bright and exciting. For certain there’ll be technological advancements and, as environmental awareness grows, there’ll be increased emphasis on using eco-friendly products, energy-efficient equipment and the exploration of further waste reduction measures. I also believe we’ll see a focus on green certification standards to substantiate commitment.

Ian Anderson, Managing Director at ABM, All Ireland, asks: 10 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I’d love to see more awareness being raised on the career possibilities: cleaning is so much more than a job and should be recognised as a vocation. Many of Principle’s senior management began their working lives as cleaning operatives.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Constructive criticism is an opportunity for growth, and will only ensure you improve and increase your skills and knowledge, so take it positively and show that you’re

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS WHO ARE FULLY COMMITTED

TO THEIR ESG JOURNEY, WHEN IT COMES TO PROCURING CONTRACT CLEANING SERVICES? It’s extremely important that both parties are aligned on how they’ll jointly deliver their ESG strategy and work in unison on this. Key things to look for include certifications such as ISO 14001, proactively reducing products containing harmful chemicals, actions towards energy-efficiency and green practices, and social factors including employee welfare and supply chain. It’s a journey that requires regular monitoring to ensure expectations and goals are being met, and I’d encourage a culture of continuous improvement.
