ADHESIVES & GROUTS

Sponsored by UZIN A RELIABLE BOND

Uzin provides expert advice on selecting the optimum adhesive to use when installing luxury vinyl tiles.

There are various adhesives which can be used to install luxury vinyl tiles. Pressure-sensitive adhesives, high-temperature adhesives and heavy-duty adhesives can all be used. Each adhesive has their own merits and is used depending on the area the luxury vinyl tiles are being installed. Once the correct adhesive has been selected for that particular area or subfloor, then there are other important factors to consider such as choosing the correct notch size. No matter what notch size or adhesive is recommended by the manufacturer, it is also critical that there is sufficient transfer of adhesive on to the underside of the LVT. If these few simple rules are adhered to, then it will help eliminate common failures we see.

“If LVT is being installed in areas with extreme temperatures, heavy-

duty adhesives such as UZIN KE 68 should be used to provide a strong and reliable bond.”

Pressure-sensitive adhesives such as UZIN KE 2000 S are most commonly used for installing LVT as they are fitter friendly and can give longer working times making them more popular. They can be more tolerant of plasticisers as long as the subfloor preparation is correct. Wet-set adhesives such as UZIN KE 66 allow better transfer of adhesive and restrict any movement of the tiles when installed. They also allow the tiles to be removed temporarily for easier re-work compared to pressure sensitive adhesives.

High-temperature adhesives such as UZIN KE 66 are fibre- reinforced for increased reliability. These should be used when installing luxury vinyl tiles in areas subject to high and fluctuating temperatures such as conservatories. However if LVTs are being installed in areas with extreme temperatures, for example, a

south-facing building with large windows which could magnify the temperature, heavy-duty adhesives such as UZIN KE 68 should be used to provide a strong and reliable bond. UZIN KE 68 is also tolerant to moisture which could penetrate joints if the weld fails. Perfect for shop entrances and commercial kitchens.

“No matter what notch size or

adhesive is recommended by the manufacturer it is also critical that

there is sufficient transfer of adhesive on to the underside of the LVT.”
