J-Lock Spacers: At Last, the perfect solution to keep those floating floors in check

Every tradesperson who has ever fitted a floating floor has encountered the problem of maintaining the correct expansion gap during the installation process. This has been an on-going obstacle facing both experienced fitters as well as the novice DIY’er. As most of you will be aware it’s very important to ensure there is the requisite space around the perimeter of the installation, otherwise the floor could buckle and lift.

The wedge-style spacers that come with most standard installation kits are often ill-suited to the task. So much so that many professionals abandon them altogether and opt for some other “fix” or “bodge” of their own, often using off-cuts of the flooring to pack the space.

It was this very problem that confronted Adrian Battle, a carpenter and building contractor with over 35 years’ experience working all over the United States. Over the years he grew weary of using traditional spacers that were not always effective in keeping floating floors, especially laminates, in place during installation. In one instance, Adrian was in a customer’s home installing a laminate product on a steamy summer day. On this

particular job there was one section of wall that was not perfectly straight. Every time he got to that place, he would push the floor together, but the planks would pop apart, leaving him to start the installation all over again.

It was during this moment of exasperation that Adrian had a flash of inspiration and the J-Lock Floor Spacer was born. “I was becoming increasingly frustrated” recalls Adrian. “Then I thought, what if I had something in the shape of a “J” that would sit on top of the board?” Other spacers on the market he had used in the past were too expensive, clunky, they wouldn’t stay in place and could be difficult to remove. Moreover, if they did become jammed the result of trying to force them out would often lead to the floor being damaged. All very unsatisfactory. The beauty of the J-Lock is that it stays in place, maintains the correct gap, is easy to remove and won’t damage the floor. A truly elegant solution.
