SOUNDING OUT Heckmondwike FB discusses the acoustic advantages of carpet in the workplace.

Although carpet stands to be one of the most popular flooring choices for commercial spaces, the great debate of many offices continues. Which is best, carpet or hard flooring? With so many options available, choosing the right one can be a tricky decision.

Here at Heckmondwike FB, we have over 50 years’ experience in providing a wide range of flooring to commercial offices, so it’s safe to say we know a thing or two about what’s best for the workplace.

Carpet offers a host of benefits, one of which being how it affects the room acoustics. But why does that matter and how can carpet help?

Sound is transmitted by the vibration of air molecules, and because of the individual fibers and underlay associated with carpet, sound can be absorbed. Hard flooring doesn’t have the frequencies required to absorb sound and, according to the American Society of Interior Designers, carpets are 10 times more efficient in reducing noise compared to other flooring options.

It goes without saying that there are many benefits to having a more relaxed atmosphere in the office, and room acoustics can affect the overall atmosphere in a room.

With less noise and sound reverberation, workers tend to be more focused, which in turn, boosts productivity. A more relaxed atmosphere can also improve workplace culture, raising the overall morale of employees and reducing stress.

OUR FIBRE-BONDED RANGES As we continue to develop our products, 2020 has seen the relaunch of our Montage range which has revolutionised fibre-bonded carpet design and will help transform commercial spaces.

Both the Montage range and Odyssey range, which has also been relaunched this year, are ideal for office environments. Not only do these particular carpets do a great job of absorbing sound, the bold and modern look of the carpets provide a great aesthetic.

The carpets are designed to offer a reduction in impact noise (BS EN ISO 140-8: 21db) and are anti-static, making them ideal for offices using computers in particular. The update also includes eight new modern colours, available in both four-metre sheet and tile formats, so companies can pick and choose a design to suit them - one that is bespoke to their business.

DESIGNS AND PATTERNS As well as the practical features of our carpets, we’re

passionate about the design. We strive to provide our customers with carpets and carpet tiles which are not only excellent quality, but look great, too.

The value of design should not be ignored. Not only can different designs and patterns be used to inject personality into the workplace, they can help to portray corporate brands. You can also choose to mix and match carpets to distinguish different areas within an office, such as breakout areas, where the change in carpet can help identify where employees should work and where they should eat or relax.

In a COVID-secure workplace, flooring design is a simple and effective way to reinforce one-way systems. Bespoke designs, like those found in our Social Distancing Carpet Tiles, can be used to aid with wayfinding and navigation, to point people in the right direction. Arrows, which are laser engraved into the carpet tiles, can be combined with social distance messaging to remind staff to stay apart in these places.

OTHER BENEFITS There are many other benefits to choosing carpet over hard flooring in your office, which could save you money in the long run. Carpets provide excellent insulation, which means your space will stay warmer for longer and bills associated with heating will reduce over the year. Plus, softer flooring is generally safer, which is definitely something to consider in the workplace.
