CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2025 SHOW & TELL
From brick and water installations to British manufacturing champions, flooring innovations and headline talks by Sabine Marcelis and Tom Dixon: what to expect at Clerkenwell Design Week 2025 from 20 – 22 May.
Set to be its largest edition to date, Clerkenwell Design Week returns to EC1 London this month. With over 15 venues – including three new locations: The Charterhouse and Charterhouse Square, Studio Smithfield and the Church of Design at St Bartholomew the Great – and 160 local design showrooms, the 14th edition promises an immersive experience featuring installations, product launches, exhibitions, talks and workshops.
FROM BRICKS TO WATER
Leading this year’s festival is a major new public artwork by British artist Alex Chinneck, set in Charterhouse Square. This special commission marks Chinneck’s return to sculpting with brick and playing with architectural elevations. The piece incorporates repurposed steel salvaged from the demolition of another London building, thanks to the sponsorship of Cleveland Steel. It is developed with the support of Crittall Windows, FabSpeed and Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC.
Meanwhile, Albion Stone and Hutton Stone return to Clerkenwell Green with Brick from a Stone: Arch Revival, a new pavilion designed by Hawkins\Brown and engineered by Webb Yates. The installation features two freestanding vaulted arches that are almost 4 metres high: one built from sandstone bricks sourced from Hutton Stone’s Northumberland quarries, and the other from Heritage Portland Stone bricks from Albion Stone’s Dorset mine. Each arch uses a single layer of 102mm-thick stone bricks, showcasing the material’s strength and versatility as a load- bearing architectural product.
This year, Clerkenwell Design Week partners with Dezeen to launch the Shaping Water competition in collaboration with Villeroy & Boch and Ideal Standard. Architects and designers were invited to create a large-scale installation exploring the essence of water, to be installed at the historic St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. In addition to receiving £5,000, the winner has been given a £15,000 budget to bring their vision to life.
DESIGNED AND MADE IN THE UK
British design and craftsmanship continue to set the standard, with a selection of brands highlighting their excellence in design and manufacturing. Joining the festival at Platform, AH HA Project
24
will unveil its first product range, inspired by the natural contours of geological formations. Spanning mirrors, side tables and desk accessories, each piece is crafted from Valchromat – a high- density wood fibre panel made from recycled pine wood and mill waste, coloured throughout with organic dyes and bonded with non-toxic resin. These pieces are machine-carved and hand- finished in the UK by the studio’s founders.
The British Collection will see Morgan introduce its first collaboration with Liverpool-based SmithMatthias. Entirely foam- free, Bruton is an adaptable modular furniture system designed for evolving workplace environments. Also making waves in British design, Origin Furniture will introduce a steel-framed seating collection by David Irwin, upholstered in Camira’s innovative tech- knit fabric.
GLOBAL BRANDS DESCEND ON CLERKENWELL
The 2025 festival maintains its global outlook, with Scandinavian brands leading the international showcase. Danish powerhouse HAY will present its latest collections by Erwan Bouroullec and Doshi Levien at MillerKnoll’s St John’s Square showroom. Blå Station will bring its recently Stockholm-launched pieces to the Inform showroom on Albemarle Way, while String Furniture makes its festival debut at Old Sessions House.
Other European brands to look out for include Andreu World, presenting its Benjamin Hubert-designed Calma Lounge, and Roche Bobois highlighting its iconic pieces, including the Bubble sofa and Prismo desk, at Church of Design.
CRAFTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FLOORING
From bespoke wood flooring to sustainable innovations, discover the latest launches and experiences from top flooring brands at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. Wood flooring specialist Knot and Grain will present an immersive stand at Design Fields, where a striking slice of unfinished oak – which serves as a collaborative space – invites visitors to explore samples and engage in the bespoke flooring process in a relaxed setting.
