A PRO-FESSIONAL RESULT

Vinyl flooring at the University of South Wales was laid in record time thanks to products from F. Ball & Co. Ltd.

F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro High Performance Smoothing Underlayment, a fast drying and fast setting smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 500 Micro Floor Finishing Compound and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive, have been used to create a high-quality vinyl floor finish in the Atrium building of the University of South Wales.

Puma Floors of Cardiff, was contracted to install the vinyl flooring in the university building, which had been newly built with raised access metal panel flooring.

Firstly, Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was applied over a total area of 16,000m2

. The smoothing

underlayment is fast setting and within an hour of application on the university floor, it was walk-on hard. The fast-drying properties of Stopgap 1200 Pro allow it to be dry enough to receive new floorcoverings from just four hours.

In addition to its fast-setting and fast-drying formulation, Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment has been specially designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers. The high performance, self-smoothing product provides a professional, cost-effective solution to challenging floors, without the need for mechanical removal of adhesive residues or priming in most instances. Stopgap 1200 Pro is suitable for use in clinical and biologically sensitive areas such as hospitals, laboratories and clean rooms.

“Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing

underlayment saved us 21 days in total because it dries so quickly.”

Commenting on the university project, Hywel Williams, contracts director of Puma Floors said: “I have been using F. Ball products since the beginning of my career and I can always depend on them to get the job done. Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was perfect for this project; it saved us 21 days in total because it dries so quickly, allowing us to provide the university with a quickly fitted, aesthetically pleasing floor.”

Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound was then used to fill any areas where joints between the panels were showing through the smoothing underlayment, to provide a completely smooth surface ready for the application of adhesive and installation of a new vinyl floorcovering.

Stopap 500 Micro is a rapid-drying floor finishing compound that provides a smooth surface to plywood, existing floor smoothing underlayments, sand/cement screeds and other rigid dry absorbent surfaces, prior to the installation of floorcoverings. Stopgap 500 Micro is dimensionally stable and is supplied as a pre-blended dry powder, which is designed for Micro-Coat application to a feathered edge. It is protein-free which allows it to be used in biologically sensitive areas.

Stopgap 500 Micro will be sufficiently dry to allow installation of floorcoverings after 25 minutes at a Micro-Coat thickness.

Finally, contractors from Puma Flooring used Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive to secure the Polyflor vinyl sheet floorcoverings, providing the university with a top quality, attractive and professionally fitted floor, in time for the start of term.

Styccobond F44 is a solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive, which is designed to give a high bond strength, strong initial tack and a long open time. It is protected against bio- degradation and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating installations. Styccobond F44 can be used for securing vinyl sheet and tile floorcoverings to EN654, EN649 and EN651; rubber floorcoverings and some textile floorcoverings with PVC and polyurethane foam backings.
