MAKING HISTORY MODERN
Here Steve Radcliffe, Senior Specification Manager at Interface, explores the recent transformation of one of Manchester’s iconic buildings.
Studies on workplace design have demonstrated the tangible impact a well-designed space can have on employee wellbeing, productivity and more widely staff retention. Office design has therefore become of critical importance to employers.
The historic 111 Piccadilly, in Manchester, was redesigned to create a modern multi-functional workplace, seamlessly blending the old with the new through the use of flooring design.
The building was previously called Rodwell Tower and is known for its unusual construction and heritage. First opened in 1965, the 210 foot tower was built on stilts so it could sit above the Rochdale Canal, a key trade and travel route during the Industrial Revolution. It is now home to co-working zones, offices, meeting rooms and lounges. As part of the revamp, it was essential that the design of each space would be distinct and inspiring, while also giving subtle references to the building’s history.
Our World Woven collection provided Bridge Architects with the ideal solution throughout the building. It puts a modern twist on classic patterns like Scottish tweed, to help bring a sense of heritage to a space. In addition to this we used Linear Tweed to create definition. When it came to marking out individual spaces, we opted for a variety of colourways including Natural Tweed, Charcoal Tweed and Black Tweed. The final product in the design scheme was World Woven Mod Café, which worked perfectly with the bespoke wood furniture used in the office and the wider scheme.

By opting for Interface products, the architects knew that not only would their design look beautiful, it would also stand the test of time. Like all Interface flooring the products are durable, making them ideal for offices with high footfall.
Following a successful installation, 111 Piccadilly was shortlisted for ‘Small Commercial Interiors Project of the Year’ in the design industry-renowned awards, Mixology North.
