NATURE’S BEST

Wool provides a wealth of benefits for commercial flooring applications. Graham Clark, Head of Marketing at British Wool, explains more.

WHY DOES WOOL PERFORM WELL

IN CARPETS? Wool is designed to protect sheep from all kinds of weather, so it’s naturally constructed to last a lifetime. British wool performs particularly well in carpets because it’s grown specifically to protect British sheep from wet, cold and windy British weather, so it’s naturally more resilient and durable.

Like human hair, wool is composed of proteins which give it a complexity that man-made fibres could never replicate, and in turn offers superior performance characteristics thanks to its natural oils, scaled structure and springy construction. This means British wool carpet is naturally hardwearing and easy to care for.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC BENEFITS

FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS? British wool carpet performs particularly well in commercial premises such as hotels, casinos, airports, and theatres because it is a rigorously tested fibre and has an extremely robust response to high levels of use.

It’s an incredibly strong wool with superior bulk, which provides added resilience in processing and production as well as long lasting durability in textile products. This is why British wool is used extensively in quality wool carpets and rugs, as it will withstand heavy and repeated footfall to maintain good appearance in the long term.

It’s also selected for its fire safety, slip resistant and cushioned surface and its capacity to absorb echo, noise transfer and reduce high impact instantly.

HAVE THESE BENEFITS BEEN

INDEPENDENTLY TESTED? We are currently carrying out a carpet testing project, comparing British wool carpet against synthetic carpet and also a range of other wool carpet. Testing is being carried out by BTTG – a world renowned carpet testing house - and Salford University – a specialist in acoustic testing.

All the carpets we’ve manufactured for testing purposes will be subject to a range of industry standard tests, including appearance retention (Hexapod test), tog rating, static load, yarn strength and yield. The results will be available later this year.

We also offer a detailed independent environmental impact Life Cycle Analysis report to our partners, designed to highlight the specific benefits of using British wool flooring in a commercial environment. Our 'Best Management Practises' study on husbandry, health and environmental standards is also available, designed to support NSF 140 accreditation for sustainable carpets.
