EDITOR’S VOICE

Hello and welcome to the February issue of Tomorrow’s Contract Floors.

As I write this, the world is in the grip of panic over the Coronovirus outbreak. So far, at the time of writing, 30 January, China has reported 7,711 cases and 170 deaths. There have been dozens of confirmed cases as far away as the USA, Australia and Europe.

The Chinese government is now rapidly building a 1,000-bed hospital in Wuhan as part of its efforts to contain and treat patients. Of course, as with any healthcare facility, the top priority should be that the building is efficient in promoting healing and reducing the risk of spreading infection.

In this issue, Lucy Bilotto at Altro looks at the role that flooring can play in infection control. Her insightful article puts silver biocide additives under the spotlight and outlines the arguments of those in favour and against their use in surface coverings, presenting the position of academics and regulatory bodies.

When designing for healthcare, it is important to consider not only safety, but also aim to create a therapeutic and restful environment for patients. With this in mind, we hear from Elizabeth Butcher at Tarkett on how to design a dementia-friendly environment, that can improve residents' wellbeing.

Elsewhere in the issue we take a look at Floor Tiles and Screeds, Resins and Coatings. I hope you enjoy reading.
