Here, Sian O’Neill, Head of Marketing at Topps Tiles, provides some top tips for using patterned floor tiles to create visual texture and interest in commercial or residential interiors.

MAKING A STATEMENT

Today, interior design entails much more than opting for functional colours and robust flooring that can withstand heavy use. With rising consumer expectations for on-trend styling, commercial customers are also increasingly looking to create spaces that are eye-catching and bold for maximum impact.

Choosing the right colours and tile designs for the space can affect the overall mood and productivity of those inside it. Floor tiles are a great choice because they combine style and durability, as well as practicality and cost efficiency.

When you want to make a real impact, let the floor do the talking. Here are some things to think about when planning statement patterns in a commercial setting.

CHOOSE YOUR STYLE An attention-grabbing floor can transform a space from something ordinary to a place where people will want to spend time. This is especially important in commercial buildings that can sometimes struggle to find an identity.

However, with floor tiles the options are endless. They can create a striking modern contrast to a traditional-looking space, or give a modern room a new-found sense of heritage.

It is important to bear in mind that a statement floor needn't be colourful to make an impact. A Moroccan-inspired monochrome finish, for example, relies on the patterned floor for its dramatic impact, which takes the design from stark to something truly stylish. For a similarly stunning effect, try Victorian-inspired chequerboard flooring in a white-themed room.

INSIDE AND OUT Patterned floors tend to look best in formal reception rooms or hallways – where there is a need to create visual impact – as well as in grand rooms to show off the height and width of a space.

If you use your floor to introduce some colour into your room, find inventive ways to bounce that colour around the rest of

the space. For example, an intricate light fitting can reflect a shade back down to your floor, creating balance without competing for attention. To ensure the effect is not too busy, keep walls neutral and, for very colourful patterned flooring, consider limiting yourself to picking out just one or two shades to revisit around the room.

In period buildings, statement patterns can create a seamless look between the outdoors and in, with tiles that flow beautifully throughout the space. For example, the Grosvenor patterned porcelain tiles are inspired by classic Victorian style. Coordinating corner and border tiles give the perfect finishing touches for a truly individual design.

Some tiles, such as our Monogeo range, are versatile enough to be suitable for walls and floors, both indoor and outdoor.

DEVIL IN THE DETAIL When working with big impact designs, it is useful to remember that grout can be just as important as the choice in tile. In fact, grout has a significant overall effect on the look and feel of the tiles, whether you are choosing a coordinating shade to provide a seamless finish, or a contrasting tone to add structure and definition.

Another key consideration for commercial settings is the functionality of floor tile options. Commercial floor tiles must adhere to HSE slip resistance guidelines, and compliance is needed to prevent injuries that are caused by slips, trips and falls.

As consumer tastes change, it can be challenging to keep up with the latest interior trends. However, in recent years, we have found that many customers are looking to be more adventurous with their choice of flooring. The joy of floor tiles is that they tick every box. Combining style and functionality, there is something for everyone.
