THE IDEAL PRESCRIPTION
Subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create high- performance flooring finishes under time constraints in hospitals in Nottingham and Sidcup.
SPIRE HOSPITAL, NOTTINGHAM F. Ball’s Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap 300 levelling compound and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive were used to install 6,500m2 hospital in Tollerton, Nottingham.
of vinyl flooring at the Spire
AJ Floorcraft, of Derby, were subcontracted to install flooring throughout the newly-built hospital. Prior to the installation of the levelling compound, the subfloor was mechanically cleaned to remove impurities. Following this, two coats of Stopgap F78 one-component, rapid drying waterproof surface membrane were applied. Stopgap F78 impedes the passage of residual construction moisture from affecting subsequent floorcovering installations, allowing early installation of floorcoverings in fast-track building programmes.
Contractors from AJ Floorcraft then applied Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty levelling compound to the hospital floor. Fast- drying and self-levelling, Stopgap 300 HD is suitable for use in light to heavy-duty areas for preparing sound absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings.
Stopgap 300 HD was particularly suitable for this flooring installation as it is designed for use in areas such as hospital corridors, which are subject to heavy loads and/or high levels of foot traffic or wheeled traffic, such hospital trollies or wheelchairs.
Finally, Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive was used to secure the vinyl floorcoverings. Styccobond F44 is a solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive, which has a long open time and is designed to give a high bond strength. It is protected against bio-degradation and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating installations.
SIDCUP CANCER CENTRE F. Ball products have also been used as part of a major development to create a satellite Cancer Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.
The new 1,700m2 state-of-the-art centre at the hospital
is expected to provide 16,000 radiotherapy and 4,600 chemotherapy treatments a year. As such, the hospital needed a high-quality floor that is able to withstand heavy usage and vigorous cleaning while also having an aesthetically pleasing finish.
A moisture test undertaken on the recently installed sand/ cement screed subfloor, using a Protimeter MMS2, found readings of 999, well above the “at risk” reading of 200, indicating excessive levels of residual construction moisture in the subfloor.
Timing implications of the project meant there was insufficient time to allow the subfloor to dry naturally, so, after sanding down the floor to create a smooth surface and removing all laitance and contaminants, flooring contractors

Mode Flooring Ltd, acting on advice from F. Ball’s technical service team, applied two coats of Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane.
Stopgap F78 requires 15-20 minutes curing time for the first coat and a further 30 minutes curing time for the second coat, so a barrier against RH values of up to 95% can be created in less than two hours, making it an ideal time-saving solution for the project.
Once the waterproof surface membrane was dry, contractors used F. Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag mixed with Stopgap 114 Liquid to create a low odour, protein free, levelling compound to achieve a smooth and level surface ready for the application of F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 high bond strength adhesive to secure the vinyl floorcovering to the surface.
With its strong initial tack and long open time, F44 was ideal for ensuring the floorcovering was securely adhered and would also be able to withstand heavy foot traffic and vigorous cleaning.
Mode Flooring Ltd director Andrew Searle said: “I use F. Ball products a lot on a day-to-day basis so I know the products will be reliable and the company’s technical service team and brochures can always be relied upon to recommend the right products for each job.
“Before we started the floor installation F. Ball’s technical team carried out a survey of the area and recommended the products for us to use and we followed that advice.”
