Joining Forces: Ashfield District Council and the Department for Work and Pensions
When a branch of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) moved in to share the existing office of Ashfield District Council the benefits of LVT came to the fore. The space needed refurbishment to facilitate efficient co- working and the design was crucial to create zones for each organisation, while still maintaining an open plan layout. The flooring was a key aspect of this and global modular flooring manufacturer, Interface, provided a range of its latest products to create a striking design.
“We wanted the workspaces for the council and the Department for Work and Pensions to be clearly visible, but it was important that this didn’t compromise the overall look and feel of the space” said Chris Nicholls, Principal Design and Maintenance Officer at Ashfield District Council. “It was also essential that the space was refurbished with accessibility in mind to cater for the varying requirements of those who use and visit it.”
The space was redesigned using Interface’s modular carpet tiles and its more recently launched Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) range. As Donna Dent, Concept Designer at Interface, explained: “Level Set is Interface’s first modular resilient collection designed to work in combination with the company’s carpet tiles, offering an integrated modular flooring solution. The two textures of carpet and LVT can come together to not only establish zones, but also create a more contemporary interior.”
Carpet tiles from Interface’s Employ collection feature throughout the office – while products from the Employ Loop range offer a clean and seamless look, Employ Lines tiles create a linear pattern to help visitors flow through the space. The office features colourways including clementine and sunset, each of which are neutral to the two organisations sharing the space. This ensured no one brand was favoured during the design process, and helped establish a unified space.
Users of the space have varying access needs and other types of modular flooring often require the use of transition strips which can alter floor height and limit accessibility. Interface’s Level Set range has been designed to work without these strips, so the company was able to offer a solution that ensures a smooth transition across the space. The edge-to- edge layout also helps one zone flow seamlessly into another, enhancing the overall feel of the space.
Chris Nicholls concluded: “The end result is a great example of how investment in design can have a significant impact. We now have a bright and welcoming space that works for Ashfield District Council employees, staff from the Department for Work and Pensions and our visitors.”
