ARDEX UK supports the sympathetic restoration of St Mildred’s Church in Ashford. OVERVIEW
St Mildred’s Church, a centuries-old landmark in Kent, underwent a meticulous restoration that balanced modern performance with historical sensitivity. ARDEX UK was proud to support this prestigious project, working closely with tiling contractor GB Tiling Ltd and main contractor Parker & Son to deliver a solution that honoured the building’s heritage.
CHALLENGES
The restoration brought several unique challenges, including the need to accommodate multiple subfloor types – such as traditional lime screed that required breathable materials – as well as the requirement to make intricate cuts around historical features including 700-year-old pillars and 400-year-old gravestones. Another key consideration was the integration of modern Jupiter underfloor heating with finishes appropriate for a heritage site.
SOLUTIONS
To meet these challenges, the team adopted a carefully considered approach. Subfloors containing lime screed were treated with a lime and sand premix, ensuring both breathability and a consistent grout colour throughout the church. For the main flooring installation, Purbeck limestone was laid over the Jupiter underfloor heating system, and a hammered finish was chosen for the ramp entrance. The ramp surround was bullnosed
