board should not exceed 5mm and the entire board thickness to not exceed 18mm. In some cases, it is recommended that the boards are glued together upon installation which helps mitigate any risks caused by changes to temperature.
WHICH ELECTRIC UFH SYSTEM
SHOULD YOU USE? ThermoSphere Foil is the safest and most advanced electric underfloor heating system that is designed to heat engineered timber, laminate, carpet, or vinyl floor finishes. At only 1.5mm thick, there is minimal impact on floor height. In fact, for the perfect installation the total floor build-up (excluding the floor finish layer) is only 7mm.
The hard-wearing foil designed for a long-lasting installation with efficient heat transfer. The double layer of foil is specifically designed to protect the heating element and achieve an even spread of heat to the floor above. ThermoSphere Foil is the only heating foil with a continuous earth braid to ensure complete protection and safety.
ThermoSphere Foil was the first fully earthed foil system in the UK to feature protected and accessible cable loops which helps to simplify the ‘cut and return’ process during installation, ensures heat transfer is not lost and provides protection for the heat element after installation is complete.
HOW THERMOSPHERE FOIL
REDUCES IMPACT SOUND Hard floors which don’t include isolation material between the covering and floorboards exacerbate impact sound transmittance. For impact sound including footsteps, an acceptable level of 62dB is set for floors in new builds and 64dB for conversions as set out in Part E (Resistance to Sound) of the Building Regulations.
With ThermoSphere Foil, a 1.2mm cushioning overlay (slip layer) protects the heating cables from any abrasion caused by a floating floor finish and a 5mm cushioning underlay allows the heating cable to snuggly lay on a protected layer which further reduces the chance of abrasion. This combination provides 21dB impact sound reduction.
CASE STUDY: PREMIER HOUSE Premier House is a 1960s concrete frame office building which was converted into 119 luxury residential apartments. The development had 13 floors so the specified products within the floor build-up had to have strong acoustic sound reduction properties as well as a minimal height build-up.
The client was considering a wet underfloor heating system but was having difficulties in finding one which allowed for minimal height build up. ThermoSphere Foil was proposed as a low build-up alternative.
This solution provided a completely dry installation and a minimal height build-up. This meant that the client could maintain perfect room heights no matter the constraints of the structure. Importantly, the acoustic improvement surpassed the building requirements stipulated by building control.
