F. Ball helps install wood floorcoverings as part of two heritage refurbishments in public and private settings.
F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond B95 high performance flexible wood adhesive has been used to install wood floorcoverings as part of refurbishments in two very different locations: The National Gallery, in London, and a 19th century residential property.
Styccobond B95 is a one-part, flexible, moisture curing polyurethane adhesive used for installing a wide range of wood floorcoverings. It is quick to develop a high bond strength, is non-flammable and solvent and isocyanate free.
THE NATIONAL GALLERY, LONDON Styccobond B95 has been used to install 400m2
of new
timber flooring at the National Gallery, London. Prior to installation, the subfloor was prepared using Stopgap Green Bag general purpose levelling compound, which created a smooth and level surface for the new oak floor.
Located on London’s famous Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is home to the nation’s collection of paintings, dating from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. ‘A gallery for all’, the National Gallery opened at its existing site in 1838 and now contains more than 2,300 paintings. As part of an extensive refurbishment programme, the floors in five of the historic building’s lower galleries were upgraded by flooring contractor, Floors Truly of Tonbridge. As such, the existing floor was removed and a new sand/cement screed was applied and primed using Stopgap P131. A general-purpose primer, Stopgap P131 prevents levelling compounds drying out too rapidly and promotes their adhesion to the subfloor.
To create a smooth and level surface, Stopgap Green Bag smoothing compound was applied directly onto the primed subfloor surface at a thickness of 3mm. Incorporating excellent flow and self-smoothing properties, Stopgap Green Bag facilitated fast and simple installation over the 400m2
area.
Following the installation of the smoothing compound, Styccobond B95 adhesive was used to secure the 20mm thick prime grade oak planks to the subfloor. A high- performance flexible wood flooring adhesive, Styccobond B95 is specifically designed to accommodate the natural movement in wood flooring over its lifetime. Solvent free and non-flammable, it is quick setting and develops a high final bond strength. In addition, the product is protected against biodegradation and is suitable for use over most underfloor heating systems.
Glen Fisher, director of Floors Truly comments: “We use Styccobond B95 adhesive for the majority of our wooden floor installation projects. A proven track record and our familiarity with the product’s moisture curing times made it the ideal choice for the National Gallery.”

in the refurbishment of a residential Victorian property in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
Lambourn Flooring & Interiors, of Lincolnshire, was contracted to install the 100m2
of wood flooring in the property that had been totally stripped and boarded over with flooring grade plywood.
Contractors then used Styccobond B95 flexible wood flooring adhesive to install the parquet herringbone wood flooring over the plywood boards. The adhesive can be used for securing engineered boards (semi-solids) and a wide range of plank and wood strip flooring up to a maximum length of 1.5 metres.
Styccobond B95 can be applied to Stopgap levelling compounds, structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete, sand/cement screed and plywood (Minimum 6mm flooring grade WBP). It can also be applied directly to Stopgap waterproof surface membranes within 24 hours of the membrane curing.
Matt Blackburn of Lambourn Flooring & Interiors, said: “We use F. Ball products on every single flooring installation that we do; they’re tried and tested and always allow us to create a professional and aesthetically pleasing floor finish. Using Styccobond B95 in this Victorian property enabled us to create an impressive flooring that our client was very pleased with.”
