‘Thought’-Acquired Infection


With approximately 300,000 patients a year in England affected by healthcare- associated infections Kaivac explores whether the perception of cleanliness by those in a healthcare setting, can impact a patient’s wellbeing.


Most of us have heard about healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Also called nosocomial infections, a HAI, according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, is ‘an infection that develops as a result of medical care. This may occur in a hospital, outpatient surgery centre, nursing home, rehabilitation facility, or while receiving wound care services.

In order to develop an infection while receiving these services, bacteria must enter your body.


Infections can be associated with procedures such as surgery performed in the medical facility, as well as the devices used to perform these and other medical procedures. HAIs are a serious issue. Approximately 300,000 patients a year in England are


affected by a healthcare-associated infection as a result of care within the NHS, according to the UK’s National Health Service.


As big as this problem is, it can be very difficult to prevent HAIs. Effective and hygienic cleaning is certainly paramount to keeping HAIs at bay, but a medical facility with clean and shiny floors, spotless bathrooms, thoroughly
