Every Breath We Take, A book about air

This delightful book by Maya Ajmera and Dominique Browning will bring a smile to your face with its bright and colorful photos of children, animals, and plants from around the world. Its message is simple — that we all need clean air: people, plants, and animals. It describes the various traits of air and that although invisible, its movements can be felt, smelt, heard, and seen. Air pollution, its causes, and what children can do to make change are also briefly discussed. The last page spread goes into more detail about the

concepts and importance of clean air. It would be fun for young children (K–2) to predict the different characteris- tics of air and give examples of them before reading the book. The forward by Julianne Moore, an activist member of Moms Clean Air Force, speaks directly to the children reading this book and could also provide a platform for talking about activism and creating change. – (VU)

Wildheart: The Daring Adventures of John Muir

John Muir’s legacy as an explorer, inventor, and early environmentalist is known globally to older generations, and now a new audience can be inspired through the graphic novel Wildheart: The Daring Adventures of John Muir. His mes- sages about the interconnectedness of all living and nonliving things on Earth are more relevant today than ever. Author Julie Bertagna creates a nice balance between narrative, quotes from Muir’s own writings,

and his philosophical musings. The story moves along through his life in a light but powerful manner. William Goldsmith’s illustrations will pull the 8–12-year-old reader right into the story with their strong lines and energy. This is also a great read for encouraging perseverance and resil- ience in young people today. — (AE)

If You Played Hide-and-Seek With a Chameleon

An educational and fun-to-read resource about wild crea- tures and their most interesting traits. Bill Wise’s narrative involves kids challenging animals during 12 competitions, each one featuring a different creature employing its greatest strength (e.g., a cheetah running during a race). This is a great resource for kids aged 5–11 to learn about what makes these animals stand out from the rest and why they have gained so much appreciation from us. Illustrator Rebecca Evans beau- tifully captures every scenario,

cleverly integrating each animal in its respective game. On the last page, Wise includes a chart featuring real-life pictures of each animal to showcase more fun facts about them. An impeccable resource for opening conversations about wild animals with young children and to awaken their curiosity. — (SVN)

Why Should I Walk? I Can Fly!

“A well-told story with enough pathos to deliver its underlying message of environmental stewardship.”

This adorable tale by Ann Ingalls, with bright and whimsi- cal watercolor illustrations by Rebecca Evans, will delight children ages 3–8. Why Should I Walk?
