Appendix B

Activity: Flashcard Story Ring Grade Level: Kindergarten–6th-grade

Follow the same instructions as in the Scientist Spotlight in Appendix A, but instead of creating a poster, you will create a flash- card story ring (Figure B). Using flashcards is a fun way to get students engaged in materials, and flashcards can be used as study aids as well as in games. You may need to adjust your questions or help students frame the questions.

In my example, I made flashcards based on my interview with Molly, using brightly-colored paper that could be easily read by children. Colored construction paper or colored index cards are also easy and affordable alternatives that will work to create your story ring.

Science of NEPA | Deliverable: Kindergarten–6th Grade | Regional Scientist Interview Flashcard Ring

A series of questions was asked to women in different areas of science across the region. These flashcards feature the interview Q&As as well as photos and key graphics. Using bright, high contrast colors and a child-friendly font, these cards were designed to be easily read and retained by children. *Not all questions shown

NEPA Science Spotlight Hi, my name is Molly Fox!

I’m a Laboratory Analyst II at MTF in Jessup, Pennsylvania. I’m 26 years old.

I went to Marywood University for a degree in Biology.

MTF is the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation and it is the largest tissue bank in the United States.

MTF does 3 things:

• makes safe tissue available to patients

• provides the best tissue

• advances the science of tissue transplants

My specialties are Swab Sampling and Membrane Filtration.

My high school chemistry teacher sparked my interest in all science.

Knowing that the end result of my daily work is used to help someone.

Explore the possibilities. There are many different fields and aspects of science. You just need to find the one that you like the most.

Don’t be.

Science is interesting the more you study it!

I like to play piano as well as bake and decorate cupcakes and cakes.
