What were or are some of the core issues or problems that you want to solve through your solution? If you think about what it is to be a patient in a hospital bed today, you’re surrounded by IV pumps and monitor- ing tools like we’ve never experienced before in human history. Yet, the primary interface for a patient in a hospital bed is still a 1970s technology—the nurse call button. For most hospitals, this looks like a pillow speaker with a nurse call button built into it. We’re really about using smart room technology to create a new interface for hospitals. It’s not about replacing the doctors and nurses hands on the patient, but rather using technology to help the patient better control, and certainly better understand, what’s happening to them. We are a software company that runs on various hard-
ware in the patient room. The most important thing we’re doing is integrating these smart devices to the IT systems in the hospital, specifically the electronic medical record, or other systems like real time location systems, so that the interface is tuned and personalized for every individual patient based on their demographics, clinical condition, and treatment stage. It’s also in the patient’s preferred language, according to the EMR. The integration enables nurses to automatically assign educational videos to the patient room, helping patients understand their diagnosis, medications, and preparing them for discharge. Automated education assignment and documentation enables clinical nurses to augment learning gaps and foster more meaning- ful relationships with patients and their families.
Were there any technical or technological obstacles to optimizing your solution? Old infrastructure for hospitals can be an obstacle. And that’s a reality with whatever kind of technology you’re lighting up inside a hospital today. Cinderblock walls are hard to run new wiring through, fortunately, hospitals are quite aware of this. And they’ve gotten pretty adept at navigating it. If you’re building a hospital today, every new hospital or new tower or new wing is designed and built with this kind of interactive
technology in the room in mind. If you’re building a hospital room for tomorrow, whether that tomorrow is next year, or literally tomorrow, you’ll want an experienced partner to get this right. But the reality of old infrastructure is that it can be a challenge for some hospitals.
What makes your solution particularly innovative or different? The differentiator for us is twofold. One, we’re really a smart room company. Patient education and engagement using the in-room TV is what often begins the conver- sation for us, but we have a very broad ecosystem of thoughtfully designed solutions that provide hospitals with a modern approach to elevating the patient experi- ence, while also creating clinical efficiency. Our platform is plug and play, yet we don’t insist on deploying every one of these endpoints everywhere we go. Second, it’s our intimate relationship between our software engineers and our clients, we think that the best ideas come from our hospital clients. In fact, we put software engineers on site, often with our clients, because we really want them to be intimate with our clients and we want to empower them with the greatest insights into what the problem is that the client is trying to solve.
Where have clients taken on your solution and really thrived because of it? There was an interesting case study done with one of the top research hospitals in the U.S. who used our digital whiteboard in their Emergency Department. They deployed our digital whiteboards in a select number of rooms and left old dry erase boards in other rooms. And then they exposed patients to both of these kinds of rooms—this was an IRB approved study. The result was astonishing—96 percent of the patients who were in a room with our digital whiteboard preferred it to those patients who were not in a room with that kind of technology, citing improvement in communication, comfort during their stay, and overall satisfaction with their experience.
