AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN

Convolutional Neural Network

Leaders in 3D Scanning and Inspection of Automotive Components and Assemblies

The Thermal Ranger’s convolutional neural network Improving AV safety with C Thermal vision

onventional neural networks (CNNs) are being deployed to accurately and reliably locate and classify pedestrians and animals in the dark from their own thermal signatures. A new whitepaper

released by Owl Autonomous Imaging has revealed how its monocular 3D thermal ranging computer vision technologies are helping to enhance vehicle safety during the day, at night, and during adverse weather conditions. In combination with the company’s Monocular 3D

Thermal infrared camera, Owl’s Thermal Ranger 3D sensor technology uses artifi cial intelligence (AI) deep learning and custom thermal sensors to extract dense range maps capable of identifying and classifying living objects. With the addition of the fi rm’s unique CNN software, the system can quickly and accurately measure the position of vulnerable road users like pedestrians and animals before alerting the driver. If the driver does not react quickly or accurately enough, the autonomous vehicle’s brakes and steering system can be instantly activated to prevent harm to the identifi ed individual, as well as damage to the vehicle. “If you are involved in the development of next-

generation autonomous vehicle safety and ADAS systems, it is essential for you to understand how CNNs contribute to thermal imaging capabilities,” says Chuck Gershman, CEO and Co-founder of Owl Autonomous Imaging. “Safety is a critical gating point for the automotive industry’s successful implementation of autonomous and self-driving vehicles. Being able to see at night and recognise pedestrians and animals in the road is an important safety hurdle that needs to be conquered.” The CNNs can extract all the information required for

automatic emergency braking decisions from a single thermal image. As a result, vulnerable road users can be located and classifi ed in the dark from their own thermal signatures using a single infrared camera.
