National Geographical Centre focus on EC lab fan efficiency


Following a tireless process working on a fume extract retrofit specification, Axair were awarded, delivered, and assisted to integrate the entire polypropylene fans schedule for the prestigious National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NCOS).


The retrofit, which had the objective of increasing energy efficiency with the introduction of EC components into the site, was tackled in several phases due to budget restrictions and to ensure all components were integrated with the building management system seamlessly. Axair’s industrial and technical team worked collaboratively with the contractor, specifier and building management consultant to ensure accurate EC fan selections that would deliver the required operating duties required to provide supply and extract to multiple classified area categories across the building.


Axair’s inhouse technical team worked to support all stakeholders with the integration of the EC fans and inverters into the building management system to deliver current monitoring solutions that could meet the objectives of the project:


To improve the energy efficiency and reduce fume extraction system energy consumption across the site.


This new schedule of works is an exciting and significant project for Axair to be involved in and showcases the quality and value of the polypropylene fume extraction fans.

New S50 ATEX fume fan sales explode


Expert fume fan technical for Bournemouth Pathology Lab


Axair worked extensively with SDDS to support the cutting- edge pathology facility at Royal Bournemouth Hospital.


During the lifetime of the project, the five-page fume fan schedules changed according to building updates, consultant amendments and legislation. Axair worked closely with the awarded contractor to deliver a suitable specification in line with the required airflow and pressure duties of each plantroom application.


The most impressive outcome of this project was that although Axair were awarded with the industrial fan order, they were not originally named on the specification. Due to the tenacious, technical ability of our Industrial team, who are trained to fine tooth comb through specifications, they quickly identified any errors or discrepancies in the fan selections given on the schedule based on the given duties, and made the necessary comments back to the consultants for checking. They showed a higher degree of precision, technical ability, and overall customer care to ensure the fume extraction systems would perform as efficiently and at their optimal performance. Ultimately securing the order with the confidence of both the consultant and M&E contractors.


In partnership with SEAT Ventilation, Axair have successfully rolled out the extension of their market leading range of fume fans with ATEX S50 polypropylene fan with an explosive number of enquiries for the enhanced product. The S50 is the largest and most powerful fan in their ‘S’ range, and is now available in an ATEX construction, certified for use in Zone 2 hazardous gas environments.


Responding to market demand for a larger ATEX certified fume and gas offer, the ATEX S50 fan has been designed to extract fumes from highly corrosive or toxic environments where there is a risk of fire or explosion in the event of a rare or abnormal malfunction or leak. The latest product launch of the S50 ATEX, can achieve airflows up to 16000 m3/h and provide high air flow against medium system pressures.


One major advantage to UK customers is that Axair hold stock of the entire corrosion resistant polypropylene range including the new ATEX S50, saving valuable time for their customers working on tight schedules. Axair welcome enquiries from new or existing fume extraction customers.

After several decades supplying the UK hazardous market with ATEX fans suitable for gas zones 1 & 2, and dust zone 22, Casals Ventilation has now formally communicated their intention to produce ATEX fans certified in combustible dust zone 21. A zone 21 environment refers to an incidental presence of explosive atmosphere during normal duty, happening occasionally, as shown in the featured image.


ATEX fans for dust are constructed under the same regulated and rigid procedures required of all ATEX fans including permissible pairings, clearances, and motor protection, all to prevent ignition. One focus of


ATEX dust fans is on reducing the build up of uneven dust build up on the rotating parts, for example backward curved or radial impellers that lend themselves more to self-cleaning properties.


Therefore, Axair will now provide ATEX fans for use in all gas and dust environments, with the exception of zone 0 or zone 20 environments. We welcome enquiries from new and existing customers to discuss the timescales and introduction of zone21 metal and stainless-steel fans.
