Achieve Sharper Raman- based Microparticle Characterisation

Strategic Partnership will bring New Developments in UN3373 Compliant Sample Packaging Solutions

Alpha Laboratories Ltd and shuttlepac Ltd are delighted to announce that they have established an exclusive distribution partnership, in the UK and Ireland, that will bring new developments in UN3373 sample packaging solutions.

Alpha Laboratories’ expertise in UN3373 compliance has, over many years, supported users in the healthcare and diagnostics arena, to develop compliant packaging systems for the transport of clinical samples from patient to laboratory. Alongside the provision of an extensive range of off-the-shelf packaging components, this also includes the development of bespoke kits.

shuttlepac Ltd is a specialist manufacturer of high quality, cost-effective packaging solutions for primary use in diagnostic testing and clinical research applications. These include the innovative ShuttlePouch™ that provides a convenient, compliant secondary packaging solution for specimen vials.

Rob Vint, Alpha Laboratories’ Managing Director said: “The demand for easy-to-use specimen packaging to meet legal transport requirements for biological samples continues to escalate. Working with shuttlepac will enable us to expand our offering and develop new solutions designed to further meet customers’ needs.”

WITec GmbH, the pace-setting leader in Raman microscope technology, has enhanced its ParticleScout automated particle analysis tool to offer even greater speed and versatility for finding, classifying and identifying microparticles.

ParticleScout now includes integration time optimisation that uses the signal to noise ratio to determine how long each particle is measured for identification. This not only greatly reduces overall measurement time, but also minimises the effects of fluorescence.

“The first release of ParticleScout was a response to the general demand for a microparticle analysis system built around Raman spectroscopy,” said Harald Fischer, Marketing Director at WITec. “This version is driven by direct feedback from researchers and their specific requirements in laboratories focused on environmental research, food science, pharmaceutics and many other applications.”

The enhanced ParticleScout has added image processing features such as vignetting correction, smart zoom that displays particle information dynamically depending on viewed area, and multiple sample area targeting. These conveniences are complemented by the integration and possible combination of dark-field, bright-field, epifluorescence and transmission sample illumination.

A software routine has been introduced to accelerate measurements of round samples such as filters that contain homogeneously distributed particles. It allows a wedge section to be selected for analysis and the results can then be extrapolated to represent the whole. Another innovation is the smart separation of closely adjacent or touching particles. This is especially useful for densely packed, heterogeneous samples.

Data post-processing with WITec’s TrueMatch™ Raman database management software is updated as well, including the ability to identify individual components in mixed spectra. Hit quality index (HQI) calculation is also optimised with automatic noise reduction and substrate spectra removal. Together these advances enable a new degree of precision in sample characterisation.

Finally, the quantitative report that summarises the results of a ParticleScout investigation can now be formatted with pre-configured templates such as tables, bar graph histograms or pie charts for clear and effective data presentation.

Ian Beardsall, shuttlepac’s Managing Director said: “As our company continues to grow, a strategic alliance with a renowned market leader is a key focus for us and the synergies with Alpha Laboratories are clearly apparent. The partnership brings a unique offering of high-level industry knowledge with groundbreaking product development, providing next generation products to fit market requirements. The ShuttlePouch™ range is exclusive to Alpha Laboratories in the UK and Ireland, with access immediately to significant volumes. The partnership enables us to work closely with the industry and together we will continue to develop further products, providing a powerful, cost effective solution to the clinical and diagnostic market.”
