August/September 2011 New Summer Package Deal Serves up Sizzling GCMS System Savings

This summer Shimadzu UK is offering up to 25 percent savings on a complete GCMS system that is ready to produce high quality analytical results for a diverse range of laboratory applications, which cover R&D, academia, hospitals and general chemical manufacturing. Shimadzu UK’s ‘Summer GCMS Package Deal’ features the Shimadzu QP2010SE GCMS plus a capillary column supported with a NIST library for a special price tag of only £30,000. Another ‘Summer Deal’ sees Shimadzu’s QP2010 Ultra EI GCMS being offered for as little as £40,000 even though the system is fully equipped with a capillary column and benefits from NIST library support. Both the QP2010SE and QP2010 Ultra EI are rugged GCMS systems offering reliable performance and featuring a dual filament with auto changeover which ensure minimal data is lost during sample sequencing. Extremely versatile, robust and easy to maintain, both systems enable front

opening access to the source area. Simplifying maintenance still further, the systems are designed to ensure that the quadrupole analyser is not disturbed during source cleaning. The high performance QP2010 Ultra EI , which is capable of rapidly pumping down to enable qualitative analysis within 10 to 15 minutes, also achieves industry leading fast scan rate of 20,000 amu/sec and offers the highest signal to noise performance of >500:1 for 1pg OFN. The performance of both the QP2010SE and QP2010 Ultra EI systems can be easily enhanced with the addition of a direct sample inlet probe accessory that can heat up to 500°C and offers total software control. Some examples of the diverse range of analytical applications that can be achieved with the QP2010SE and QP2010 Ultra EI systems include analysing semi volatiles in drinking water, identifying PBDEs in plastics and creating fatty acid profiles in neo-natal screening for inborn errors of metabolism. To qualify for the ‘Summer GCMS Package Deal’ organisations need to place an order with Shimadzu UK for the Shimadzu QP2010SE system or Shimadzu’s QP2010 Ultra EI system before 30th September 2011. Investment Opportunity for Innovative New Chromatography Product

JPP Chromatography, a small UK technology company, announces the development of an air stable, single (one bottle) ‘hydrindantin-free’ ninhydrin reagent for amino acid analysis. All commercially available ninhydrin reagents sold for high performance ion chromatography amino acid determinations are currently based on the original 60 year old Moore and Stein method, which requires the presence of the highly sensitive hydrindantin as an ‘accelerator’. Two or more reagents must be mixed before use in the post-column reactor, where air must be rigidly excluded at all times - a tedious and inefficient process. JPP’s reagent still causes a high speed reaction with amino acids and amines in the reaction coil at 130ºC to produce the intensely coloured Ruhemann’s purple. It can therefore be used on all ninhydrin based amino acid analysers without modification. It is totally unaffected by the presence of air, production is much cheaper, it is extremely stable and shelf- life is very long. JPP’s over- riding aim was to come up with a product that makes life much easier for the end user, which it has succeeded in achieving. JPP seeks approaches from potential partners.

LabLogic has introduced a version of its tried and tested Laura chromatography data system specifically for PET applications. The aptly named ‘Laura for PET’ is a single system that can control and collect data generated by all standard methods – gas, thin-layer and high pressure chromatography and multichannel analysis. Data is collected digitally to ensure accuracy and is also easy to extract for QC acceptance purposes, and half-life can be corrected on-line - a feature unique to ‘Laura for PET’. Audit trails can be configured to suit individual requirements; results can be calibrated for quantitative data analysis; and methods, calibrations and reports can all be locked against modification to ensure consistency of operation. “Introducing ‘Laura for PET’ reduces the number of data systems that have to be learned to just one, so disruption to the PET lab’s production process is kept to an absolute minimum,” said Keith Hall, LabLogic’s Laura Product Manager. “Users also have the reassurance of knowing that it is based on a reliable product designed specifically for working with radio nuclides as well as ‘cold’ techniques that has successfully evolved in response to chromatographers’ changing needs for more than 20 years.”
