From the Editor Up Close and In Person!!


Well, with social distancing, maybe not up close, but at M&M 2022 in Portland


we will once again be able to greet one another and discuss our science in person. It has been far too long since we have had an opportunity to see old friends and meet new colleagues. Since it has been a couple of years, I want to mention a few “can’t miss” meeting highlights. In addition to those mentioned below, information about many other meeting events, activities, and social events will be available throughout the week at the MSA MegaBooth. Te Sunday night Opening Reception will kick off the meeting and provide an


excellent opportunity for attendees to get reacquainted and relax before participating in the excellent Scientific Program organized by the Executive Program Committee and Session Chairs. Te meeting kicks off with the Monday morning Plenary Session where Dr. Wendy Garrett of the Harvard Medical School will discuss her research involving the gut microbiome and colon cancer, and James Rea of Stony Brook University and the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Sciences will help us explore strategies to engage our audience when presenting our work. During the Plenary Session, several Society Awards will be presented to outstanding microscopists and scientists from MSA and MAS. Articles and the crossword puzzle later in this issue provide more details about their accomplishments. For those who successfully complete the crossword puzzle, turn it in at the MegaBooth, and have their name drawn, there will be giſt cards provided each day of the meeting! Troughout the week there will be platform and poster sessions addressing many


aspects of microscopy and microanalysis. Te exhibit floor is once again a sell-out and will showcase the latest and greatest imaging equipment. It will be interesting to see up close and in person the technological advances made in the last two years. In addition, evening vendor tutorials will provide an opportunity for small groups to further explore new equipment and techniques on the exhibit floor. Microscopy Today is a controlled-circulation trade magazine owned by the Microscopy Society of America that is published six times a year in the odd months. Editorial coverage spans all microscopy techniques including light microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, ion-beam techniques, and the wide range of microanalytical methods. Readers and authors come from both the life sciences and the physical sciences. The typical length of an article is about 2,000 words plus figures and tables; feature articles are longer.
