Girls Golf goes ‘golden’ at banquet
n BY CORI MATHESON
Tees Awards banquet in December! Over 100 girls, families, and partners
T
from the Girls Golf of Phoenix family joined us to celebrate the year at Studio Movie Grill in Scottsdale. The girls and their families and friends smiled under camera lights, walked the red carpet {actually, hot pink}, and even caught video of themselves featured on the big screen. This unique awards party welcomes
some of the girls’ role models as hosts of our red carpet where these “celebs” interview the girls. Two special alumni of Arizona Junior Golf — LPGA Tour player Cheyenne Woods and Arizona State Sun Devil player Madison Kerley — worked a golden-glitter microphone in the glamour of bright lights and paparazzi to welcome the girls. This celebrity- style welcome reception helps the girls know that they are the true stars of the evening. The girls wear their best party attire, and that makes their faces light up. And, of course, having Cheyenne and Madison there truly takes things to the next level. After the red carpet, it’s off to the
theater for dinner, a movie, and awards, with a lot of help from family and friends. Girls Golf also creates an end-of-the- year “movie” with clips and pictures to highlight the year’s best moments. Girls Golf works hard to include every girl in attendance and all eyes are glued to the big screen, where they laugh, cry and reminisce in the memories that enriched their lives this past year. are presented and, like any Oscars-style event, there are category nominees and envelopes that reveal winners in a suspenseful drum-roll. This year Girls Golf presented Golden Flamingos in the following categories: gratitude, enrichment, engagement, energize, character, rookie of the year and empower. A special award and gifts were bestowed on chief benefactor Geri Cavanagh, and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf founder Sandy LaBauve did a presentation on how the organization was conceived. The day after The Golden Tees, LaBauve sent Girls Golf a note saying, “It was such a fun night to come together with you,
Geri, the girls and your family. The love and support shines through from all.” LPGA-USGA Girls Golf is a family, a
special community that is empowering, engaging, and energizing Phoenix-area girls — and the extra gold sparkles sure do help! The third edition of its Golden Tees Awards celebration gracefully capped off a very successful year, and 2018 is going to be so much fun! n
